Need Energy!

You know sometimes you need to do a lot of things, but your body and/or mind is not very cooperative. You are tired and prefer to be in bed or relaxing on the couch. You know coffee helps, but will also probably keep you awake at night when you actually can go to bed. And coffee some say, is like drugs, so not so good for you.

Then I found Guayaki Yerba Mate Organic Energy shots. The word "USDA organic" caught my eye, and I wanted to try it. It is made with organic superfoods like Yerba Mate, Goji BerryAcerola Cherry and Ginger. Guayaki also seems Fair for Life certified by IMO, kosher, certified CCOF organic so pretty impressive.

You new Substitute for coffee?

I am not a big fan of energy drinks, as usually there is a lot of artificial flavoring in it. When I find a new food like this, I like to do some research on the ingredients. This way I get educated along the way! *

The main ingredients listed above, like Yerba Mate should boost your energy and give you focus and clarity as mentioned on Guayaki's website. They also say  it is healthier than other energy-giving ingredients like coffee, tea, kola nut, cocoa and guarana, and in some countries in South America it is a national drink.

Guayaki is a dietary supplement. It seems at least better choice than most energy drinks. And they have a few interesting flavors, Chocolate Raspberry is my favorite. ( but Lemon is good too). It actually tastes really good!

For me, I found I was more alert, without my heart beating faster (That's what I get from drinking coffee) I feel the same just a bit more alert. I only take it when I am extremely tired and have to do something, or work.

But really, the best recipe for getting enough energy , is not drinking energy drinks, but is getting enough sleep, that's for sure!

You can order Guayaki on Amazon:

*p.s These are the results of my research on the ingredients of this product:

Guayaki ingredients include organic evaporated cane juice, not really my favorite.

It also says "Organic flavors", I wonder where these come from?

It also contains  L-Malic acid, which I found after research on chem-online.org:

"L-Malic acid: Main function and Purpose: As an acidulant, L-Malic acid is especially suitable for jelly and foodstuff containing fruit ingredient. It can keep the natural color of juice. Used in health drinks, it can resist fatigue and protect liver, kidney and heart. L-Malic acid can enhance pharmaceutical stability and improve pharmaceutical absorption. It can be added into composite amino acid injection, directly participating the metabolic cycle of organism-Krebs cycle. It can reduce the metabolic loss of amino acid and can compensate hypohepatia, cure uremia and hypertension, and weaken the damage of anticancer drug to normoblasts. It is also used in skin disinfector, air depurative and deodorizer." In Europe it has code E296, and I also found it is not a synthetic form (that's D-Malic acid).

In a book I own with all the E-numbers and explanation, E296 is filed under the "contradictory research results, be careful" category. (Which means some say it is healthy, some say not. When in doubt do not use this additive. Especially when you are pregnant or planning to. )Under E296 says it should not be given probably to young children.

This is what I found about Guar Gum:" A natural food thickener, 8 times more thickening ability than corn starch. It grows primarily in Pakistan. It was used in weight loss pills to give a feeling of fullness, but has been banned by FDA for that purpose. Diabetic patients should be careful, and only take it when drinking at least 8 ounces of liquid. In Europe it has code E412.

In my book E412 shows following: also filed under the "be careful" category. In bad cases people can be allergic, and this additive is mostly considered harmless. But it does "Pas op" which means "watch out".

With this information I can take a conscious decision for myself, and will take it only when needed, and not multiple times a day.

Doing research about food is always important, I mean, you put that food inside your body, better know what it is exactly! I always recommend researching your food!

OYL healthy drink tasting!

Antoniette (our newest OYL contributor) and I, did a healthy drink tasting at Wholefoods with a few drinks we found. We noticed there are so many new health drinks on the market! We wondered: how do they taste, which are the "healthiest" in our opinion, and which ones are our favorites? There wasn't really a bad drink we tried, but below are the 5 ones that made our cut.

Coconut water.

Harmless Harvest raw coconut water

There are so many more coconut brands that are available now at Wholefoods. But we like Harmless Harvest 100% raw coconutwater. They say they are "raw" and not processed. Sounded interesting! We really liked the taste of freshness, it was tasting maybe a bit more like coconut water straight from fresh coconuts. Cute little bottle, but a little too little for me I love me some coconut water!

Probiotics.

Kevita coconut drink

We also tried Kevitacoconut probioticdrink, and that was very interesting. It taste like coconut water far away, but a bit more watery, with a fizz to it. probiotics are supposed to be very good for the health of your intestines. Some swear by it.I thought it was nice but not my favorite. Organic, vegan, diary, gluten- and soy free, made in California.

Health drinks.

Mama Chia

Mama Chia "Seed your Soul". This drink gives you a funny feeling in your mouth, but taste great! I actually loved the feeling of the chia seeds in my mouth.Antoniette even bought more of it after our tasting. Chia seeds are considered Superfoods, because they contain a lot of nutrients, like antioxidants, Omega-3, fibers. Found by Janie Hoffman in San Diego, this drink is also gluten free & vegan, pasteurized, . USDA organic.

Energy drinks.

Sambazon Jungle Love Energy Drink

We sometimes need a pick-me-up during the day of course! I tried Sambazonall natural Amazon Energy Jungle Love drink. It has 140 calories, 80mg natural caffeine and 460% vitamin C from acerola, he flavor was Acai passionfruit. Acai is an amazing purple berry from the Amazon. Other ingredients to bring you up include maca, guarana, yerba mate, guarana, catuaba. All USDA organic. I like this one a lot!

Super food drinks.

Cell-Nique

Cell-Nique. This drink some like the taste, some don't. It contains 31 Superfoods. And it is low glycerin, gluten free, vegan protein. It is supposed to energize, alkaline and detox your body, and it's low in calories too! You should shake this drink before drinking to mix the drink well and get all the benefits. I like the colors of the design of this brand's bottles!

So tell me now: What's your favorite drink to quench your thirst?
