homemade body scrub

Making your own body scrub, it is very easy!

You basically need 3 ingredients ( preferably organic).

3 ingredient homemade body scrub

  1. A scrubbing ingredient: crushed salt, sand, sugar, crushed nuts or anything else that can scrub but is not too coarse.
  2. An oil to nurture and soften the skin. Anything from olive oil (not extra virgin) to coconut oil, almond oil.
  3. A drop of an ingredient for the scent: lemon, tea tree, rose water, vanilla whatever is your favorite scent!

Mix it all and use it on wet skin, and massage softly onto your skin. Afterwards, rinse with water. It works and makes your skin soft and smell great!

Jojoba oil

Before I decided to focus on my music and Vocal Psychology to help people find their inner voice, I worked as a psychologist and gave trainings on the subject of personal effectivity. I would give people advice on how to reach their goals better, and 2 terms I used a lot were 'efficiency' (how you reach a goal) and 'effectivity' (IF you reach a goal). If there's one thing I'm very fond of, it's efficiency... I like it when things make sense, I like it when you can use something for multiple reasons, I love it when I have found the shortest route to what I want. And obviously I want my methods to work as well....

My discovery of Jojoba Oil

What's with the lecture, you might ask? To illustrate why I almost cried a little bit when I read an article from one of my favorite bloggers, Gala Darling. She wrote about how jojoba oil was 'the elixir of the gods', describing how it is really good (effectivity) for your hair AND skin (efficiency).

Needless to say, I was fascinated by this information... I ordered a bottle from an online shop and tried it out for the past 2 weeks. I used 2 drops of it every night after cleansing but before moisturizing my skin, and 3 drops after I washed my hair. Conclusion: I AM STUNNED! It really works miracles!

What did Jojoba oil do for my skin and hair

My skin is usually of the notorious combination type, where my T-zone is oily and the rest dry. The jojoba oil really evens it out, which is great for so many reasons: obviously it just looks better and healthier, I don't have to touch up my make up during the day, my hair stays cleaner etc.

My hair is curly and thick, and it gets dry very easily. The jojoba oil makes it look very shiny and healthy and my curls really come alive! Also, it seems like I don't have to wash it as often (which could also be the result of my better skin).

Other ways you can use it

  • Lip balm
  • Eye make up remover (that doesn't irritate your eyes)
  • Shave prep
  • Massage oil
  • For a higher IQ (ok, that might not be true)

I swear I am not a spokesperson for this product (yet). But I could be, I am psyched to have found this! Try it out at home, it's very cheap, you don't need much of it for any purpose (another efficiency factor) and it's effective... And I didn't even mention the fact that your bathroom will look so organized, after you've thrown away your moisturizer, lip balm, make up remover and hair products!

Model Hair Care

As a model I get to work a lot for hair campaigns ( I've been blonde, light brown, dark brown, reddish...)  - so I take extra care of it in my daily routine.

Model hair care

We hear a lot about homemade hair care... many of them really work, some only help a little, but great improvements takes BIG actions! Let's face it , nowadays we have very effective hair treatments/products at the local supermarket and we can use that to make really smart creations at home combining some of them with organic ingredients.

To show you I am really into haircare for my work, look at a few of my advertising campaigns below:

My good friend and amazing Brazilian hair dresser Marco Antônio Di Biaggi  (he is the Twitter KING with hundred thousands of followers, nobody beats him ) , gave me some tips that I would like to share with you:

Haircare tips by Marco Antonio Biaggi

  • The "must have" product in my opinion and also in Marco's - is the Argan Oil. A variety of brands make this Morrocan oil their main ingredient to help nourishing damaged hair. As rich and powerful as the Argan Oil, is the coconut oil, the quinoa oil and the grape seed oil. Hair products containing these ingredients can be find in stores such as AéSOP, Lush and Whole Foods Market.

OYL choice:Josie Maran 100% Pure Argan Oil Travel Size - Organic and Natural Oil that Nourishes, Conditions, and Heals (15ml/0.5oz)

  • So here it goes my first tip: Take your regular moisturizing/ hydrating treatment mask you're used to and add 3 to 5 drops of the Argan Oil to a little amount on the palm of your hand, apply on your hair as usual and leave it for 15-20 minutes washing away later then. Marco Antônio says that for better results you may start the treatment with previous cleaned hair.
  • As a Brazilian girl, I LOVE coconut water! I've tried combining the power of the coconut oil and the coconut water itself and I found very satisfying results. So just leave 5 drops of the coconut oil acting on the length of your hair for 20 minutes and then wash it away with coconut water from the coconut. WARNING! Do not use those coconut water sold in boxes!! The idea is to be totally organic and this water contains a bunch of other ingredients such as added sweeteners or preservatives which doesn't any good for the hair.

OYL choice: Fractionated Coconut Oil – 100% Pure & Natural Premium Therapeutic Grade - Coconut Carrier Oil for Aromatherapy, Massage, Moisturizing Skin & Hair – Huge 16 OZ

  • Today's final tip is to complement two strenghts : Olive oil and raw honey. Olive oil is good for conditioning and dandruff control, and the honey attracts and holds moisture - perfect for damaged and dry hair. Mix it up 1/2 cup of honey and 1/4 cup of olive oil , then warm it in a microwave for 15 seconds. Apply a small amount of the mixture on damp hair down to its ends. Cover the hair with a towel and have it for 30 minutes. Finalize giving it a nice shampooing, rinse and dry. You will feel the difference with the very first touch!

OYL choice: Ys Eco Bee Organic Honey 1 Pound Jar

Stir Fry Tea Oil

I recently read Valentina's post about canola oil, and I decided to never use it again for cooking or baking! But what do I use then? I know that using Extra Virgin Olive Oil is not good either, so what else is out there?

When I went to Sur La Table to buy me Le Creuset pans, I found an cooking oil I have never heard of before:

Stir Fry Tea Oil by The Republic of Tea.

It said it is USDA Organic, AND Trans Fat Free so I decided to buy it and try it!

The Republic of Tea website says:

"Cold-Pressed, Extra Virgin, and USDA Certified Organic. Tea seeds from the Camellia (tea plant) are cold-pressed to produce this exquisite and healthful organic oil. Sauté seafood, poultry or meat, toss into pasta or vegetables, use as a base for marinades, dips, dressings, sauces, or drizzle into stir-fry."

And here is another review by Organic Authority!

Well, now after a few times using it, I can see it seems very light, works well, and makes the food I stir fry keep their own flavor. So I like it, and will continue using it. What do you think about Tea Oil?

You can order it on Amazon now!

Salad making for dummies

What you need for a good salad

  • 1. Pick a kind of lettuce as a base, I prefer organic. Romaine, watercress or mix different lettuces up.
  • 2. Pick 1, 2 or more vegetables that you add raw or grilled. Like cucumber, tomatoes, grilled mushrooms, red peppers, onions.
  • 3. Add a protein. If you go vegetarian you can choose nuts. If you eat meat you can add grilled organic chicken, beef, bacon or other options. And fish: tuna, salmon, grilled shrimp or scallops as a few examples. Avocado is a nice topping as it is filling
  • 4. Add extra toppings like dried fruits to make the salad get a sweet flavor (raisins, cranberries, grapes, strawberries or other fruits)
  • Add cheese to make it more hearty (goat cheese, blue cheese, parmesan, gouda or other cheeses)
  • Add finishing toppings. Seeds, sprouts or anything else you can think of too add.
  • 5. And last: add your dressing! *Simple salt, pepper and olive oil tastes great with good ingredients in a salad.
  • If you want to go to an asian twist: add soy sauce based sauces to the dressing.
  • If you want to go light, add yoghurt in the dressing.
  • When you want to go sweet & spicy, add a bit of spicy red pepper flakes in dressing with honey

Ingredients which taste great together and in combination are great:

  •  Goat cheese, cranberries & pistachios
  •  Romaine, parmesan, croutons
  • Tomatoes, cucumbers, salt, pepper
  • Goat cheese, roasted pumpkin, sunflower seeds
  • Walnuts & blue cheese.
  • Avocado is always great to add to every salad. Tomatoes and cucumbers almost always are good ingredients too!

Just add some lettuce and olive oil!

Try your own combinations of dressing, salad & ingredients to find your favorite salad!

Love, Lonneke

Vegetable soup with rosemary recipe

vegetable soup with rosemary! I by accident added the snap peas in the beginning. Still tasted good though!

A simple, delicious, earthy vegetable soup that will give you a warming feeling when feeling cold! I prefer to use only organic ingredients.

The rosemary really gives the flavor to the soup. Leave the branches in (just tell your guests not to eat them!). The earthy smell and flavor of food grade argan oil will warm the soup up. Sesame oil works too. Reheating this soup the next day makes the soup even taste better!
ps. as seen in above picture: I by accident added the snap peas in the beginning, but it is even nicer when you add them at the end of cooking time, so they stay more green and crunchy. If you like them soft cook them with the rest of the vegetables in the beginning.

Pure Oregano Oil

Someone told me not too long ago about the health benefits of Pure Oregano Oil. That it is antiseptic, and antiviral, and works against fungi and candida.

I went to the local health store in NYC, and found it!

I found it by Quantum, and a small bottle was almost 30 dollars.

I have heard before that Quantum is a good brand, and that they have the best herbal concentrates in the industry, and the herbs have not been radiated or sprayed.

I opened it, and it smelled so strong!

I am sure I was going to be in trouble in case it would break in the airplane or something, as only 1 drop smells incredibly strong.

They recommend not more than 3 drops diluted in lots of water per day. But I also inhale it one or 2 times, as I was told that kills germs and bacterias too!

Other uses are a drop in shampoo, or hand soap, to eliminate germs.

So I guess besides oregano being a tasty herb to season your food when cooking, it has many other uses! I guess this makes you think twice about oregano when you put it on your pizza or in another italian recipe!

Lonneke at Savages premiere

coconut oil for my skin!

I am obsessed with coconut oil!

New OYL contributor , top model Teresa Lourenco told me about it. So I bought a jar, and started using it all over my body. Not only did it smell great, my skin started glowing! There are different kinds of coconut oils. Some you can also use for cooking. Read labels for what you can use the coconut oil for before buying it.

I got the organic coconut oil from Spectrum.

I am sure Teresa Lourenco will tell you all about the health benefits of Coconut oil soon, and why she loves it!

I used it when I went to the premiere of the movie Savages last week. My skin was glowing!

"Savages" New York Premiere - Inside Arrivals
"Savages" New York Premiere - Inside Arrivals

By the way, that movie by Oliver Stone is not so kosher to put it that way, and if you have a weak stomach please think twice before watching this movie! It is a movie about drugs and weed in USA and Mexico... how you can get entangled into a world you don't want to be in... There was also some great acting and even though blood flowed a lot, watching Benicio del Toro and Salma Hayek act great, was worth it. Other actors in this movie: John Travolta and Blake Lively and 2 other cute actors.
