Save the Bees!

It is not something new that bees are having a difficult time and the population has gone done about 85% in the past years! Bees pollinating plants is vital for human foods and this decline could cause a threat to food supplies in years to come.

"Achim Steiner, head of UNEP, said in a statement:

"Human beings have fabricated the illusion that in the 21st century they have the technological prowess to be independent of nature. Bees underline the reality that we are more, not less, dependent on nature's services in a world of close to seven billion people."

My memories with bees

At my high school, my biology teacher (and neighbor coincidentally) was a beekeeper in his off-time. He would incorporate this into his every day teaching, and during biology, or after school activities we would be reaping honey, or care  for the bees that were on the school's property. We would also make beewax candles. At that moment I didn't think about it twice, but years later I heard vandals burnt down the beehives, and I was quite sad! Now especially as I hear more and more about bees and how they are collapsing worldwide.

What can you do to save the bees

There are actually many things:

  • don't use chemical fertilizer in your home, or bug spray for your lawn (even the ones legally sold in garden stores can be harmful) there are great organic ones!
  • Let different plants, trees and flowers grow wild in your garden or balcony, so if there are bees in the neighborhood, they have something to eat!
  • You can actively get people involved in your neighborhood to become beekeepers, or have the environment suitable for bees to live in...
  • But there is more!

Many companies and buildings are giving up space to get beehives installed. You can now buy local honey from bees even from busy places like Soho or Brooklyn. Check out Andrew's Honey, they have beehives all over New York City!

My friend Johan Koeman of Wicked Tulips Flower Farm (formerly Ecotulips) is offering organic flowers to help the bees, together with his wife Keriann!

A BEAUTIFUL ALKALINE BODY

Did you know that you can actually make your body more beautiful, simply by becoming more ‘alkaline’? Your body has a delicate pH balancing system in which it works to keep equilibrium & stop your body fluids from becoming more ‘acid’ or if needed, too alkaline. I’m going to focus on the alkalising bit in this article as we very rarely get ‘too alkaline’ in our modern day, fast paced, un-natural lives!

Think of it this way…

ALKALINE = Improved health, extra energy, enhanced beauty, toned & more supple body, glowing skin, sparkling eyes, lustrous hair, high libido, healthy nails, faster wound/injury healing, flexibility, strengthened immunity, feeling of lightness & balance within the body, mood enhancing/positive mind.

ACID = Lethargy, sickness prone, cellulite, bad breath, slow healing, sagging skin, bloodshot eyes, dark circles, falling hair, acne, dandruff, low libido, tight muscles, painful joints, aches/pains, headaches, brittle nails, feeling of heaviness, clumsiness, depression/negative mind.

Without going into extensive scientific details here on pH know (Antoniette HELP! lol)... I'm pretty sure the term 'pH' refers to the alkalinity or acidity of water solutions. Ie: your blood & body fluids, but can refer to the watery + mineral content of anything from soil to water to plants etc. There are wonderful books, charts & informative material on the web you can discover to educate yourself on saliva & urinary pH testing, which can be a highly beneficial monitoring system. This said I usually gauge my 'alkalinity' by the way I feel!

Foods that promote Alkalinity

Raw foods especially vegetables & green foods, spring water, almost all fruits, raw milks & cheeses, cultured foods such as sauerkraut (recipe to come!), kefir, kombucha & others. Lightly cooked vege’s & broths. Freshly pressed fruit & vegetable juices, wheatgrass juice, green drinks & smoothies. Fatty fish. Almonds. Sufficient rest. Yoga. Moderation. Light stress free exercise which is enjoyable. Sunlight, hydrotherapy & fresh country air. The sea. Love, laughter & peace of mind.

Of course, there are more but these are some of the big ones you want to make sure you’re doing or not doing!

Things that contribute to Acidity

Denatured foods such as white sugar, white breads/biscuits/pastries, red meats, soft drinks, smoking, late nights, excessive technology, fluoridated water, overwork, city air, excessiveness, coffee/tea, antibiotics, preservatives/flavourings/colourings, dried fruits, high protein foods (even natural foods, eat moderately), high intensity exercise or labour, lack of sunlight & stress.

Ways to create an Alkaline body

More ways to create an alkaline body would be to indulge in salt glows (scrub moistened skin all over warm body vigorously with sea salt until pink, rinse, towel dry), dancing in the rain, nature walks by the sea or rainforest, loving the dog/horse/budgie or people in your life, deep breathing, walking barefoot on dewy grass, aromatherapy treatments/massage.

Another thought

Don’t you find it interesting to think that the foods which are most beneficial to our health/vitality & wellbeing are the foods which grow in the most abundance & require little or no preparation to enjoy? I’m meaning fruits & vegetables as opposed to meat (needing much land for grazing & spoils easily), grain/nuts/seeds (more difficult to process than fruits & vegetables) etc. Herbs grow in astonishing abundance & almost without cultivation! Herbs are something which I feel we should be consuming more of daily. Also greens, fruits of all kinds, vegetables, grasses/sprouts, & milky grains (such as fresh corn on the cob)…These foods are readily accessible & perfect alkaline nutrition. Even an avocado is rich in valuable nutrients, good fats & is beautiful in alkalinity. These are foods that promote beauty, health & wellbeing in the way we look, think & feel. They fit into our hands perfectly, our mouths & even look like our body systems, organs & sometimes even diseases (now that’s freaky! natures food designed for humans). There's really so much to discover on this subject of alkalising... The effects upon our bodies is immense so do look into it further if you are passionate about health & especially, healing.

Probably the best thing about alkalising is, YES, we will look more gorgeous, there’s no doubt about that whatsoever. It works, making you more beautiful with every positive choice you make. But to me, what's even better than the other best part about alkalising, is in the way makes me feel. AMAZING, fresh, youthful & buzzing with ideas. Every. Single. Day.

Forever Young

I LOVE NATURE. I like to immerse myself in it entirely so that the refreshing benefits endure as long as possible.

SO....we went on a this super-refreshing adrenaline-rush adventure with some friends (& their one year old baby boy) last weekend. A rock-hopping, cliff-leaping adventure! We saw the most exquisite blue dragonflies!! I wish I'd got a clearer picture of them, they were amazing. There were two waterfalls. One tiny one - which was like a frothing spa which you could sit in for ages melting away tension AND one VERY LARGE ONE - to test the courage! My girlfriend & I didn't bring swimmers so I don't have any pictures of me leaping in (very feminist we were & did so in our NUDE BRAS LOL) but it felt so very exhilerating that we had to climb back around through all the spiders, rocks, bush & jolly well whatever else to do it again!

Point of Abi's stay young crazy story: Jump off cliffs if you dare, climb trees, run in the rain, swim in COLD WATER with your kids or friends or family. Keep a little spirit of adventure within. Try to resist the urge to be a 'sit & watch' parent, brother, sister, aunt or uncle :) Go on, you know you want to, just do it... You'll stay young & feel like a superhero, but better still, the people around you will totally LOVE you for it!

Natures Food, Designed for Humans?

NATURE AMAZES ME. EVERY SINGLE DAY. Creation speaks loudly, if we would only listen to her voice, we might hear her heart beating closely, to that of our own.

FOOD. Something we think of at least 3 times a day, often more, often without noticing it's intricate design or thinking of it's designer. Maybe it's time we took a closer look.

Fungi for health?... Many mushrooms boast highly of their anti-cancer properties, & yet look at them! Almost like little tumors, springing up all over this tree, hint hint!... Excellent for boosting the human immune system.

Have you ever indulged in devouring a pomegranate, one seed at a time ;) ?... The little seeds, covered in a bubble of antioxidant rich juice & coloured blood red remind me of the cells in human blood which they seek to rejuvenate with their life giving enzymes & vitamins. The seeds contain potent bitter antioxidants too, which protect the cells against free radicals, preventing cancers & promoting youthfullness.

The tomato, excellent for the human heart, looks just like one.

The carrot, sliced into rings; behold & see the human iris as it stares back at you, hinting subtly!! I'm good for you, for your EYES in fact. Helping to prevent macular degeneration & promoting healthy vision.

Look at the fine veins within leafy vegetables. The bursting colour of fruits of all kinds, the cell segments within oranges, berries, kiwi-fruit.

Sweet potato, does it remind you of anything?... It looks like an intestine!

The gorgeous shape & texture of the avocado. Did you know that seeds of all kinds promote fertility?

I'm so ASTONISHED when I crack open fresh walnuts. Why?... Well don't they remind you of something??? Dah. Haha. There's definitely a sense of humour there somewhere wouldn't you agree? To think that they are created, designed, to look like the human brain? WOW. Hint hint, 'eat me'!

I'd never noticed that the tiny, potent chia seed is really quite grey, until this morning, & I've been eating them for years! Another super brain food rich in all omega fats.

There are so many various foods which I haven't touched on, celery, herbs of all kinds, bananas, apples, stonefruit, legumes, grains, grasses, flowers (excellent for mood enhancement!). So much variety in colour, texture, flavour. Bitter, pungent, sweet, salty. AMAZING variety abounds! Let's take a subtle or maybe not so subtle tip from NATURE! ENJOY HER BOUNTIFUL GIFTS TODAY, GIVE YOUR BODY what it craves, NATURES very own FOODS, DESIGNED FOR HUMANS. Take note of your next meal, the colours, the shapes it contains, keep it as close to nature as possible & reap the benefits for your internal organs, skin, bones, & feel each of your body systems respond with vitality & life.

A book you may enjoy which highlights many natural varied foods & food groups is 'Laugh with Health'. Excellent for beginning health buffs with simple, fast info; it lists the nutrients, medicinal properties & benefits of each food page by page with great pictures too. I encourage you to have it in your healthy library.
