Vertical Garden

There are so many ways to grow your own herbs and vegetables! Even if you have a small balcony there are ways to incorporate growing fresh herbs into your life.

Start a vertical garden

b1383ccbb69b02d8ae962db7ec8f32c3A great way is a vertical garden or green wall which fits into even the smallest space. You can make one indoor or outdoor, depending on what plants you use, as some are growing better indoors and others grow better outdoors.

You have different sizes of wall grow bags, that you can find at your local gardening center or even some florists have them as well. There are ones with just 4 pockets, and some that have a whole wall covered! Prices differ depending what you want; if you want an automatic irrigation added that is of course more expensive. I prefer to water the plants myself every day so I know how the plant is doing.

Plants on walls

There are people that have created art with them, covering houses with the most beautiful plants, like the people from Plants on Walls.

Hang them, put your favorite herbs and plants in them with some extra soil, water them daily, and you have your own mini garden. You can even add herbs like basil, thyme, mint & oregano. It is a great eco friendly solution to grow your own herbs!

What's next? Growing your own organic vegetables! woohoo!

a quick vegetarian meal!

Hello,

I like to eat delicious foods, but don't want to spend too much time in the kitchen. Sounds like a dilemma? I tell you: you can do both!

One dish we made the other day was vegetarian and Indonesian inspired. It took me only 20 minutes!

A delicious Indonesian inspired feast!

We  took vegetarian chicken by the Vegaslager, which is delicious and can compete with the flavor and bite of real chicken. But if you want to eat chicken, choose organic, that's very important. (you don't want to eat meat that has hormones, medication so the chicken can grow rapidly from being born to a full grown chicken in sometimes less than 50 days! Not healthy, so choose wisely, always  choose organic meat) I grilled it on an electric grill in 10 minutes.

Vegetarian chicken satay

We cooked organic brown rice that was quick to cook, within 10 minutes. You can take regular rice that takes usually a bit longer, around 25 minutes.

We baked organic eggs sunny side up.

We added a bit of warmed up, pre-made organic satay sauce (a sauce made of mostly peanuts) by the brand Yakso.

The salad was simple and so delicious! Shred a big carrot. Add a whole avocado cut into pieces. Add herbs/plants like parsley and garden cress cut up. Add pine nuts. For dressing: a bit of lemon juice mixed with blood orange juice. Yummy!

Eating fast and delicious foods is all about having simple, fresh ingredients. It is also fun to play with colors. Delicious foods are a feast for the tastebuds, but should also be that  for the eyes!

Enjoy!

Valentina Talks Healthy Foods

Healthy FoodsI'll share with you some tips and tricks how to choose right food that will leave you satisfied, without bloating or putting on extra pounds. Just a few ideas that you can do at home or when you have time to eat out in the restaurants with your friends.

My tips:

  • Start your day with big glass of warm water with fresh squeeze lemon juice.
  • Always have green salad before your main course.  Ok, honestly, who wants salad after a bowl of pasta?!
  • Have fruits for breakfast and try to snack on fruits until the lunchtime.
  • Drink your water!  The moment you think you are hungry, drink a glass of water and then ask your self, "Am I still hungry?"  It happens to me all the time when my body is just asking for water.
  • Replace cow milk with almond milk.  I make my own almond milk at home, and I add it to my raw granola for tasty breakfast, I add almond milk to my smoothies and many other recipes.  It is delicious vegan alternative to animal or other milks.
  • Replace white sugar, brown sugar, all kind artificial sweeteners with stevia, Agave, yakon syrup or coconut palm sugar!
  • Snack on RAW nuts and seeds: when you snack on roasted nuts (or baked or in any other way cooked) they can cause acne.  Nuts are very dense and highly fatty food. When you eat them in raw state, those fats are extremely healthy for us, but once nuts been heated above 105F they become rancid - not a beauty food you want to put in your body!
  • Choose sweet yam potatoes over regular white potatoes.
  • Choose vegetables and fruits that are still attached to there roots and vines, because they have more nutrients: for example tomatoes on the vines, fresh herbs in pots, carrots and beetroots with their tops attached etc..
  • Eat whole foods rather than pre packed, pre cut, preserved, pre made... Avoid frozen ready-to-eat microwave dinners, avoid those canned corn, beans, tuna..  Buy whole watermelon and cut it fresh at home rather then get it already cut in pieces (and think of the waste you create when you get your sliced fruits in plastic wraps).
  • Always have a (protein) bar with you in case of emergency. Idea is to choose the right one; I like Vega Whole Food Raw Energy Bar.

I wish you a happy meal!
