That time I did an 1 day juice cleanse

I once did an one day juice cleanse. All the way with the cheesy "I kiss my juice" pictures as proof.  I had a bit hangover from just drinking 2 bellinis at the Operation Smile Ball the day before. So when you don't feel so great, what do you do? Exactly you take care of yourself! Eating really healthy is your own medicine. So I decided to visit Organic Avenue.

About Organic Avenue

Organic Avenue was a vegan and rawfood chain in New York City. It was founded by Denise Mari, and back in the day I did an interview with her. There were so many new Organic Avenue Locations popping up around town at one point. To me it seemed they had a lot of success, but they also seemed to grow too fast. After a few years Denise sold the company, and from what I've read, she came back on board to run the company.  OA incorporated different foods into the menu besides cleanses (the vegan chicken and waffles was great!) but eventually they went out of business :( . Sad story of a vegan health food store I enjoyed so much in NYC! I notice many of my favorite restaurants have gone out of business, it is just part of doing business in New York City.

Now back to the juice cleanse story: There used to be an Organic Avenue Location in Soho, close to where I live, and I decided to do their one day cleanses.

The 1 day juice cleanse

I received 7 bottles of juice. 1 small one to start the day with chlorophyll, and 6 juices.  You were told to drink water in between..

8.30 am

Let's start this juice cleanse! I woke up tired and had my first juice at this time. A chlorophyll shot that made my tongue green! It has a specific taste, but it is not bad. Chlorophyll comes from plants and is an "extremely important bio molecule, critical in photosynthesis, which allows plants to absorb energy from light."- Quote from Wikipedia

10 am

My first real juice is a nice simple orange juice. A great way to start a morning with some sweet citrus fruit juice.

12 pm

Green Love juice. Cucumber, celery, chard, spinach, pear, collard greens, kale, romaine, parsley, lemon juice. This one is a bit hard to drink due to the large amount of greens in this juice. So it took me a bit longer to drink this juice!

2.30 pm

Turmeric Tonic,  lemon juice, ginger juice, purified alkaline water, coconut sugar, turmeric, cayenne pepper, black pepper, cardamom, himalayan salt. This one was spicy but I actually liked this juice! It tasted a bit like something from the Middle East because of the spices. I drank it quite fast.

4.30pm

Veggie Vibe: carrot, cucumber, beet, celery, chard, spinach, ginger, parsley, lemon. This one is hard again! Took me longer time to drink. But you feel really healthy drinking it.

At this point I felt really energized and fit! Getting so many minerals and vitamins in, plus water is really doing good for your body, right?

6.30 pm

Spicy Avocado Soup: avocado, purified alkaline water, spinach, lime juice, celery, cilantro, garlic, Himalayan salt, jalapeño, cumin. This is my least favorite. maybe because of the garlic and that it is thicker. It took me some effort to drink it.

Lonneke & Spicy Avocado Soup

8pm

Last juice of the day! Fresh, sweet coconut juice. I love ending a day like this with something super yummy!

Although some people do cleanses a few days in a row, I think it was nice to just do a one day cleanse. This way it does not "shock" your body while still replenishing your body with the essential nutrients. It is also a great that for that day you have a plan, and the 7 juices keep you on track. You don't have to think what you are gonna eat or what's for dinner at night. The cleanse is telling you that already so it relieves stress that way as well!

Why a one day juice cleanse might be good for you

Because you drink the whole day so you are very much hydrated.  And you don't have much time to feel hungry. Right when you feel hungry, you have the thicker Spicy Avocado soup that is filling. I think anyone can do a 1 day cleanse to just feel better and get rid of toxins or indigestion, if you don't get tempted by any food! So do this during a rainy day when you are likely to stay at home, or if you are stuck at the office with no food in sight, that's my recommendation.

You start to appreciate food more while on a cleanse, that is for sure!

Why juicing might not so good for you

You notice there is a lot of parsley added to the juices. This is because parsley contains lots of Vitamin K, a lot of antioxidants, which helps our bones and strengthens our nervous system.(that's good!) But I only learnt later that Parsley, other green leafy vegetables and beets contain a lot of oxalates and goitrogens. I will go into that some other time why that is actually not so good for some people like myself (oxalates can form crystals in your body and can cause kidney stones, goitrogens slow down a thyroid). Not to mention the high sugar intake which research suggests due to the lack of fiber that helps release sugar slowly into the blood system, a juice is causing a sugar spike. And juices that are not pasteurized, can bring harmful bacteria to your gut which can cause a whole other range of issues.

Maybe, just maybe, juice cleansing was a hype from 2006-2016, and now people just have one juice once a while and are onto another fad, like Keto or Paleo?

Related: Why no one does juice cleanses anymore

Organic Avenue used to offer their juices in glass bottles, but they were more expensive as there was a fee for returning the bottles. Now they serve the juices in BPA- free plastic, I thought that was a nice thing! Of course with the demise of Organic Avenue, their bottles are gone too. (I just kept one as a souvenir).

If you want to do a cleanse, there are many places in New York City and beyond to get a juice from, including Juice Press, Pressed Juicery ,Blueprint and Juice Generation

p.s. for my readers in the Netherlands: you can order from Sapmeesters.

Final thought on cleanses: You should decide yourself what works for you! I will now enjoy a small juice once a while!

Be prepared for that Coronavirus

It has been all over the news: the Coronavirus. Every few years there seems to be a new virus that is making people sick or even killing them. People are worried for a pandemic. Some are even panicking, buying all the face masks they can find, and hand sanitizer as well. I look at it from a social perspective.

Viruses and bacteria

Bacteria and viruses are part of life. In a healthy person their immune system will take care of it. But sometimes a virus or bacteria can seriously attack a person, and even send the immune system in an overdrive. It makes sense to ALWAYS care for your health and your hygiene. Wash your hands, put on a correct face mask in more risky environments, and stay home when you feel sick so you won't infect other people. Every year many people catch the flu. it even kills many people. So whatever the Coronavirus will do, we already have a flu season with many people suffering each year so not getting sick and focusing on our health is something we need to do each day of the year.

Worrying is sometimes a good thing?

While in certain areas the Coronavirus is becoming a serious problem with many people infected, in other parts of the World people seem to have become much more vigilant and careful. People take their hygiene more seriously. I wonder if this will make a difference in the yearly deaths and people getting sick from the seasonal flu as well. Because improved hygiene of many people together, especially in a populated area, is always a good thing. I would advise people to listen to your doctor, your local health care providers, and just be smart in your day to day life. We just have to be prepared and see what harm this virus will cause. We have to do this together. If you don't feel well: do not go into public, let your doctor know and if he or she advises so: stay home to heal.

I am really curious to see if we get answers to the following questions:

  • Where does this virus come from and was it altered by humans?
  • Why do some people seem to be more affected than others by the coronavirus?
  • Does age, gender, ethnicity and medical history have to do with it just like with other diseases?
  • Does the air pollution in China have anything to do with certain people getting more ill than others?
  • What helps people heal from this virus?

You might have a few questions yourself too.

Be Prepared

In any case, I always tell people to be prepared in case they are stuck at home because of illness or a quarantine period. I make sure I have enough water and food at home, for a week at least to make sure if we have to stay put, we have the water and the food. Medication is also an important one: Never run out and keep a few weeks worth of it at all times.  Candles, batteries, flash light, battery pack, warm blankets... Keep all your electronics charged. I learned about this during Hurricane Sandy. We did not have power in our area in NYC for at least a week, and some areas it took weeks! Many friends of mine did not have power. We all had to scramble, people were looking for food and ice to keep their stuff in the fridge cool because the power went out. Many were not prepared. It was a disaster. So next time a whole city is on a lockdown for a natural disaster or a viral disaster, it is important that you are prepared whether it is just a few days or a few weeks you have to be at home. This also counts for the ones you are responsible for: Your children and your pets. Make sure you have everything in order when you have to stay put for a while.

Sleep, eat, breathe and move well

One thing that is important is to get your immune system in the best shape possible to combat any virus coming your way. One easy thing many people forget is that sleeping enough hours every night is very important for the immune system to fight intruders. Also eating well, drinking enough water and breathing fresh air while going on regular walks to move your body is helping your body heal and keep up a good defense system.

Inform authorities, and check on family and friends

You should let your doctor know if you have traveled to an area with the coronavirus, or if you have been in contact with someone who has a chance of being exposed to it. The more informed everyone is, the more everyone can manage this virus. Also, check in with family and friends. Especially the elderly that you know. They might need some help. Also, stay informed yourself!

READ MORE: CNN Coronavirus update

Coronavirus Racism

Since the coronavirus appeared in China, many news outlets state that there has been increased racism towards Chinese people around the World, which is unfortunate. They (at least the ones in NYC that I experienced) are just as worried about the virus as other people. We need to be better than this. The reality is: any person can give you a virus if you are unlucky. As long as people have interactions, people will transmit viruses. That's why quarantine periods do work most of the time to stop viruses from spreading. During any virus season like the flu season, it is smart to just think a bit more if you have to go out in public or if you can just stay at home (a cosy home is a great place to spend your time!)

It is part of life as well that sometimes disaster strikes, and it is up to the people how we deal with it. The more flexible and prepared we are individually and together as a community, the more chance we will survive this calamity, and many others to come.

Stay healthy!

Coriander Chelation Pesto

I've just finished making the most easy cilantro, or 'coriander' as we call it, PESTO! Best thing about this coriander chelation recipe is that it is not only simple to make but really YUMMY.

Nourishing yourself with pesto

It's also a 'natural medicine' concoction which helps to remove heavy metals from the body I was told :) BRILLIANT for anyone with high mercury levels in the blood, hormonal imbalances, cancer, thyroid problems, neurological disturbances, learning problems, depression, food allergies, parasites, etc etc. this could help the process. I obtained the recipe from my sister-in-law years ago, who runs a renowned Health Retreat in Australia. Apparently one lady had such high blood pressure due to severe mercury poisoning, had her blood pressure return to normal after eating 2 teaspoons of this pesto daily for only a week. So whether you need to detox your body from heavy metals or just wish to use it as a preventative measure, 2 teaspoons a day is all you need to feel the benefits.

Coriander Chelation Pesto
A healing pesto made with coriander.

Author:
Cuisine: vegan kitchen
Recipe type: healing
Serves: 10

Prep time:
Total time:

Ingredients
  • 4 cloves of garlic
  • ⅓ cup brazil nuts (selenium)
  • ⅓ cup sunflower seeds (cysteine)
  • ⅓ cup pumpkin seeds (zinc, magnesium)
  • 2-3 cups packed fresh coriander (Vitamin A)
  • ⅔ cup flaxseed oil (omega rich fats) (I used hemp oil today)
  • 4 tablespoons lemon juice (Vitamin C) (I replaced 1 Tbsp with apple cider)
  • 1 teaspoon celtic or himalayan salt (pink salt) (may use Japanese Miso)

Instructions
  1. Pile everything into a blender & BLEND until fairly smooth.
  2. Add more salt if you want to & blend again.
  3. Otherwise simply store your delicious pesto in glass jars (dark glass is best), in the fridge.
  4. It freezes well, so you can buy plenty of coriander in season & freeze it for up to six months.

You could eat it this pesto three times a year, for a week at a time, to cleanse your body of heavy metals. Tastes soo good on toast, with baked potatoes or pasta, with poached eggs, I even love it as a serving addition to bowls of soup!

Cell Phone Use Tips

While there is no conclusive scientific evidence that establishes a causal relationship between cell phone use and cancer, cell phones do emit electromagnetic radiation and such exposure is never a good thing.

In 2011, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classified radio frequency electromagnetic fields as possibly carcinogenic to humans as evidenced by studies that link wireless phone usage to an increased risk for brain cancer. The World Health Organization lists on their website the health effects of radiation emitted from mobile devices as well as exposure limit guidelines.

With something as precious as our health, it is better to be safe than sorry.  As Daniel Oberhausen, a French Professor and leader in cell phone safety advises, "the absence of definitive human evidence at this point in time should not be misconstrued as proof of cell phone safety." Similarly, Dr. Ronald Herberman, director of the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute and the UPMC Cancer Center, cautions users to try to limit cell phone use. Here are some tips from the Environmental Health Trust that you can apply to your daily routine to mitigate exposure to potentially deleterious electromagnetic radiation:

1. No phone in bed

-Best to charge overnight on a bed stand at least 5 feet away from body.

-If you have to sleep with it under your pillow, put it on "airplane" or "offline" mode to temporarily abate radiation emission. When you need to check messages, you can switch back to normal mode.

2.  Texting is a good thing

-Better to communicate via text or email because you avoid greater radiation exposure associated with making calls.

3. Use speakerphone or earphones

-Best to keep phone at a maximal distance from your body and in particular, away from your head. Protect that brain!

-keep conversations short.

4. Don't let children make calls

-A child's skull is thinner and more penetrable to the emissions which can damage the organ which is still developing.

5. Weak signal means don't use

-In attempt to reestablish connection, the phone works at maximal power and electromagnetic radiation is at peak.

5. Keypad on body

-When you do keep your phone in your pocket, place the keypad facing you so that electromagnetic waves are directed away from your body.

6. Switch sides

-If you must hold the device to your head, alternate sides to avoid concentrating emission of waves to a localized part of your brain.

Forever Young

I LOVE NATURE. I like to immerse myself in it entirely so that the refreshing benefits endure as long as possible.

Go on an adventure

SO....we went on a this super-refreshing adrenaline-rush adventure with some friends (& their one year old baby boy). A rock-hopping, cliff-leaping adventure! We saw the most exquisite blue dragonflies!! I wish I'd got a clearer picture of them, they were amazing. There were two waterfalls. One tiny one - which was like a frothing spa which you could sit in for ages melting away tension AND one VERY LARGE ONE - to test the courage! My girlfriend & I didn't bring swimmers so I don't have any pictures of me leaping in (very feminist we were & did so in our NUDE BRAS LOL) but it felt so very exhilarating that we had to climb back around through all the spiders, rocks, bush & jolly well whatever else to do it again!

Point of Abi's stay young crazy story: Jump off cliffs if you dare, climb trees, run in the rain, swim in COLD WATER with your kids or friends or family. Keep a little spirit of adventure within. Try to resist the urge to be a 'sit & watch' parent, brother, sister, aunt or uncle :) Go on, you know you want to, just do it... You'll stay forever young & feel like a superhero, but better still, the people around you will totally LOVE you for it!

Models listening at IMG model prep 2012

IMG Model Talk

Did you know for years I helped young models live a healthy and organized life? For instance, on September 1st 2011, Anne-Marie van Dijk and I went to my agency IMG for the first annual IMG Model Prep which happens right before the agency's new girls start Fashion Week.

Fashion Week preparations

Not only is the fashion industry a demanding industry, the weeks leading up to Fashion Week season, and fashion weeks themselves can be mentally and physically exhausting. (Young) models have to run around town going on castings, fittings, shows, and afterparties, subway in and out, and this continuous for weeks from the early morning until late at night.

IMG which is the top agency in the World, was the first to create this event where they bring in industry professionals and experts to advise the girls on tips on what to do doing castings and shows, support and how to handle the crazy business that is fashion. Most girls need to HALT at some point because they are "Hungry, Anxious, Lonely & Tired: HALT". A great clinical worker named Betsy Selman-Babinecz explained this principle to the girls.

READ MORE: IMG Model Talk 2012

My IMG model talk

I shared with the girls my past experiences in the industry and starting at the very young age of 13, and how I continued having a successful career. I advised the girls and gave them valuable advice about how to handle the stressful fashion week season (i.e. always carry water, snacks and take time by yourself to recharge and breathe), but also about having longevity in the business, which in my view is most crucial. It is about caring for yourself, so you are able to have a long and healthy future in this very demanding and competitive world.

My friend Anne-Marie introduced her CLEANSE program. It works with models, and the CLEANSE team which is comprised of experts ranging from nutritionists, personal trainers, psychologists and beyond. They have a model counselor who works with the girls individually and allows them to have a healthy body, mind and soul.

READ MORE: IMG Models open to all

Girls were given goodie bags with nice things to help them in their modeling work. There were different tables with nice companies that were giving samples, like the sample juices from BluePrintCleanse.

At the end of the night, everyone left inspired. It was a wonderful evening on the beautiful IMG terrace, celebrating health and hopefully a lot of success of the girls this season and in their modeling career.

Pinkwashing

Ever heard of Greenwashing? Well, another common phenomenon is Pinkwashing.

Curious to learn more?

What is Pinkwashing?

Pinkwashing is a term used to describe a company or product that intends to make its customers believe they are active supporters of anti-breast cancer movements and organizations, while in fact using carcinogenic chemicals that are known to cause breast-cancer. The very cancer they are trying to fight. Quite a contradiction, to say the least!

Remember the glossy pink ribbon seen on certain packagings? Well, unless the product is quite "natural" and free of Parabens, Phthalates, Metals and Petrolatum, among others, chances are you are allowing dangerous chemicals to seep into your body.

The paradox is that we as models represent such brands, I have but one thing to say: change happens from the inside out. Be a Pioneer in your own environment!

To learn more visit the excellent coalition Campaign for Safe Cosmetics.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PCW2kr1YIxk

Do you know what is in your makeup and skincare products? It is better if you check it out. You don't want to put harmful chemicals on your skin, do you? If you do that would mean your body needs more effort to detox from the chemicals.

. * Needless to say, breast-cancer and its onset is a complex subject. By no means are certain cosmetic products the only cause of its onset. Environmental factors, genetics, family background, lifestyle etc. all play an important, yet perhaps unknown, role in its development.

Self MOTIVATION

Hi again, beautiful OYL readers... I'm posting this for myself as well as anyone of you who may read it.

Motivation

You see, WE ALL NEED MOTIVATION. Daily. Hourly, even minute by minute! So I'm going to open up my personal (very new) 'Yoga' Diary, for you to see here & it's very honest! I hope it will help to inspire you to a little extra 'self-motivation' for something you want this year.

Each year goes by. Every year (at Xmas-time, I think :( ohhh no, another year I didn't do my yoga), this is victim mentality. Even WORSE LOL, I get jealous of 'downward dogs' >>> ACTUAL DOGS stretching in the 'downward dog' posture.  Quite ridiculous isn't it? Yes hilarious.

So FINALLY, here I am kicking some butt, up it goes! YAY! Practicing yoga & it feels soo good! I'm super busy. I don't have time & have 100 excuses, believe me. I prepare three loving meals a day for my family, making everything from scratch, juices & smoothies daily, fresh bread, muesli, run kids here & there, work as a model, am writing books, shop in about 5 different places to get all the best prices & organic produce I can... rave rave, the list goes on.

If you want something though, YOU CAN MAKE IT HAPPEN. If you really want it, you will make it happen.

This is what I really want. It may take 10 years, but to make it happen I'm going to need to practice today, tomorrow, & every other day until it does. Best thing is. Every moment I do it, of every day I make the time for it, I LOVE IT. IT'S SOO WORTH IT.

Personal Goals

Same goes for anything really, what is it that you really want? Maybe it's to eat healthier, run 3 x per week, learn to surf, horse ride or waterski. Perhaps it's to grow organic vegetables. Choose a personal goal. One you've wanted for a long time & set small, achievable goals. Before you know it you may be growing so many vegetables you have a stall at the farmers market! Who knows? In the meantime you'll be enjoying yourself.

Inspire yourself by purchasing a nice diary which suits the theme of what you want to achieve most. For me it's yoga, but I'm also adding other exercise notes to it. Overall, my theme is wellbeing & fitness.  PERFECT ;)

Click here to watch an amazing yoga video ... If you are like me, YOGA is what you crave right now. Very inspirational!

LET'S MAKE OUR DREAMS COME TRUE.

Love and Chocolate,

xoxo Abigail O'Neill

PS. Thank-you to Wellbeing for such a perfect diary!

Why smiling is healthy

A well known song of Charlie Chaplin (performed in a very moving way by Jermaine Jackson, at the memorial service of Michael Jackson, and below by Nat King Cole ) has the following passage:

'Smile! What's the use of crying? You'll find that life is still worthwhile, if you just smile.'

Beautiful, right?

Laughing is healthy, they say, but why? For many reasons, actually!

Smiling is healthy physically

When you smile/laugh (the louder, the better) your brain releases a chemical called endorphin. This is a natural painkiller and has a soothing effect, which lowers blood pressure. Laughing also strengthens your blood vessels as well as increases the blood flow, so it's very good for your heart!

It strengthens your immune system

Furthermore, your immune system is strengthened during laughing. Your body produces so called natural killer cells. This type of cell is comparable to M-O of the movie Wall-E, it scans every cell and destroys the 'bad guys' like tumor cells.

And gets rid of stress hormones

During a good laughing fit, antibodies are produced, that get rid of stress hormones. So laughing is seriously stress reducing! (In the clip below that fact is demonstrated in a very funny way :D)

Do the smiling test

Getting back to Charlie Chaplin, the good man was absolutely right. Even when you don't feel well, and smiling or laughing is the last thing you want to do, it helps when you just make yourself do it anyway. Slowly, but surely, you will actually start to feel better. You are kind of fooling your own body, but it really works! A fun detail (about which I could fill a whole other blog) is that it is not as easy to fool other people. A fake smile is usually easy to spot. Try doing the BBC-test  on real and fake smiles check how well your people insight is ;)

Healthy snacks on the GO!

I've been asked a lot what I do to avoid unhealthy eating habits , so this article is dedicated to that. Some basic actions can really save your day!

Everywhere I go, I try to look for new places where I can find exciting organic food options. Also I go for greener options as much as I can, re using plastic and paper bags or water bottles for example - and always manage my diet to be the best as possible in the most different situations.

foto 1

Airplane Food

I don't like how plane food tastes and how it makes you feel bloated - so I've found a solution for it: always pack a few healthy snacks and a nice home made meal to eat on the plane...

I spend so much time in airports and airplanes that if I don't take proper care, I will end up eating something not good for me. The first time I made my own bowl with plenty of healthy food I felt much more vitality and energy to handle those never ending 10 hours seated on a plane. Everyone should try it! No shame! Even the plane staff helped me out heating the meal, and there it goes a tip if you wanna do the same: take an aluminum bowl to make it easier, then ask someone to heat for you just the way they do it with regular food they serve it.

fotoThis beautiful plate was made with love by my boyfriend and it's all organic quinoa beets and carrots with tilapia filet and caramelized onions and some boiled egg whites! YUMMY

foto 3That meal was the first one we made to eat healthy on the go: Brussels sprouts, broccoli, sweet potatoes and fish filet

Snacks at work

Sometimes at work, snacks before or after lunch time, are not nutritious enough to help me get going through my day of hard work. So again I've found a solution. I ALWAYS take with me energy protein bars, nuts and other organic healthy snacks in little bowls that fit in my bag. I will never go to work unprepared, because we never know what's for breakfast and lunch. I'm known by stylists and beauty artists for doing it ( they usually sees me sneaking in my purse ), they call me "smart girl" and I have the pleasure to share my treats with them.

These are a few simple things you could integrate in to your routine, or if you don't have a routine (in my case).  You just need to think ahead of all difficult situations you're gonna be dealing with, so you are prepared for everything!

Follow these tips on a daily basis:

  • Try not to stay more than 3 hours without eating, ALWAYS have some good snacks with you, otherwise will won't even notice that it's been hours since you bite something.
  • Drink water! sometimes your body will trick you, so you might think you're hungry and would end up cheating with bad snacks, when your body it's JUST thirsty !
  • If you don't exercise that much ( or as much as you'd like to ); always goes for smart choices: stairs instead of elevators, go walking or biking to work  - do not ever lose a chance of moving your body!
