That time I did a 1 day juice cleanse

I once did a one day juice cleanse. All the way with the cheesy "I kiss my juice" pictures as proof.  I had a bit hangover from just drinking 2 bellinis at the Operation Smile Ball the day before. So when you don't feel so great, what do you do? Exactly you take care of yourself! Eating really healthy is your own medicine. So I decided to visit Organic Avenue.

About Organic Avenue

Organic Avenue was a vegan and rawfood chain in New York City. It was founded by Denise Mari,  and back in the day I did an interview with her. There were so many new Organic Avenue Locations popping up around town at one point. To me it seemed they had a lot of success, but they also seemed to grow too fast. After a few years Denise sold the company, and from what I've read, she came back on board to run the company.  OA incorporated different foods into the menu besides cleanses (the vegan chicken and waffles was great!) but eventually they went out of business :( . Sad story of a vegan health food store I enjoyed so much in NYC! I notice many of my favorite restaurants have gone out of business, it is just part of doing business in New York City.

Now back to the juice cleanse story: There used to be an Organic Avenue Location in Soho, close to where I live, and I decided to do their one day cleanses.

The 1 day juice cleanse

I received 7 bottles of juice. 1 small one to start the day with chlorophyll, and 6 juices.  You were told to drink water in between..

8.30 am

Let's start this juice cleanse! I woke up tired and had my first juice at this time. A chlorophyll shot that made my tongue green! It has a specific taste, but it is not bad. Chlorophyll comes from plants and is an "extremely important bio molecule, critical in photosynthesis, which allows plants to absorb energy from light."- Quote from Wikipedia

My first real juice is a nice simple orange juice. A great way to start a morning with some sweet citrus fruit juice.

12 pm

Green Love juice. Cucumber, celery, chard, spinach, pear, collard greens, kale, romaine, parsley, lemon juice. This one is a bit hard to drink due to the large amount of greens in this juice. So it took me a bit longer to drink this juice!

2.30 pm

Turmeric Tonic,  lemon juice, ginger juice, purified alkaline water, coconut sugar, turmeric, cayenne pepper, black pepper, cardamom, himalayan salt. This one was spicy but I actually liked this juice! It tasted a bit like something from the Middle East because of the spices. I drank it quite fast.

4.30pm

Veggie Vibe: carrot, cucumber, beet, celery, chard, spinach, ginger, parsley, lemon. This one is hard again! Took me longer time to drink. But you feel really healthy drinking it.

At this point I felt really energized and fit! Getting so many minerals and vitamins in, plus water is really doing good for your body, right?

6.30 pm

Spicy Avocado Soup: avocado, purified alkaline water, spinach, lime juice, celery, cilantro, garlic, Himalayan salt, jalapeño, cumin. This is my least favorite. maybe because of the garlic and that it is thicker. It took me some effort to drink it.

Lonneke & Spicy Avocado Soup

8pm

Last juice of the day! Fresh, sweet coconut juice. I love ending a day like this with something super yummy!

Although some people do cleanses a few days in a row, I think it was nice to just do a one day cleanse. This way it does not "shock" your body while still replenishing your body with the essential nutrients. It is also a great that for that day you have a plan, and the 7 juices keep you on track. You don't have to think what you are gonna eat or what's for dinner at night. The cleanse is telling you that already so it relieves stress that way as well!

Why a one day juice cleanse might be good for you

Because you drink the whole day so you are very much hydrated.  And you don't have much time to feel hungry. Right when you feel hungry, you have the thicker Spicy Avocado soup that is filling. I think anyone can do a 1 day cleanse to just feel better and get rid of toxins or indigestion, if you don't get tempted by any food! So do this during a rainy day when you are likely to stay at home, or if you are stuck at the office with no food in sight, that's my recommendation.

You start to appreciate food more while on a cleanse, that is for sure!

Why juicing might not so good for you

You notice there is a lot of parsley added to the juices. This is because parsley contains lots of Vitamin K, a lot of antioxidants, which helps our bones and strengthens our nervous system.(that's good!) But I only learnt later that Parsley, other green leafy vegetables and beets contain a lot of oxalates and goitrogens. I will go into that some other time why that is actually not so good for some people like myself (oxalates can form crystals in your body and can cause kidney stones, goitrogens slow down a thyroid). Not to mention the high sugar intake which research suggests due to the lack of fiber that helps release sugar slowly into the blood system, a juice is causing a sugar spike. And juices that are not pasteurized, can bring harmful bacteria to your gut which can cause a whole other range of issues.

Maybe, just maybe, juice cleansing was a hype from 2006-2016, and now people just have one juice once a while and are onto another fad, like Keto or Paleo?

Related: Why no one does juice cleanses anymore

Organic Avenue used to offer their juices in glass bottles, but they were more expensive as there was a fee for returning the bottles. Now they serve the juices in BPA- free plastic, I thought that was a nice thing! Of course with the demise of Organic Avenue, their bottles are gone too. (I just kept one as a souvenir).

If you want to do a cleanse, there are many places in New York City and beyond to get a juice from, including Juice Press, Pressed Juicery ,Blueprint and Juice Generation

p.s. for my readers in the Netherlands: you can order from Sapmeesters.

Final thought on cleanses: You should decide yourself what works for you! I will now enjoy a small juice once a while!

Why smiling is healthy

A well known song of Charlie Chaplin (performed in a very moving way by Jermaine Jackson, at the memorial service of Michael Jackson, and below by Nat King Cole ) has the following passage:

'Smile! What's the use of crying? You'll find that life is still worthwhile, if you just smile.'

Beautiful, right?

Laughing is healthy, they say, but why? For many reasons, actually!

Smiling is healthy physically

When you smile/laugh (the louder, the better) your brain releases a chemical called endorphin. This is a natural painkiller and has a soothing effect, which lowers blood pressure. Laughing also strengthens your blood vessels as well as increases the blood flow, so it's very good for your heart!

It strengthens your immune system

Furthermore, your immune system is strengthened during laughing. Your body produces so called natural killer cells. This type of cell is comparable to M-O of the movie Wall-E, it scans every cell and destroys the 'bad guys' like tumor cells.

And gets rid of stress hormones

During a good laughing fit, antibodies are produced, that get rid of stress hormones. So laughing is seriously stress reducing! (In the clip below that fact is demonstrated in a very funny way :D)

Do the smiling test

Getting back to Charlie Chaplin, the good man was absolutely right. Even when you don't feel well, and smiling or laughing is the last thing you want to do, it helps when you just make yourself do it anyway. Slowly, but surely, you will actually start to feel better. You are kind of fooling your own body, but it really works! A fun detail (about which I could fill a whole other blog) is that it is not as easy to fool other people. A fake smile is usually easy to spot. Try doing the BBC-test  on real and fake smiles check how well your people insight is ;)

Pinkwashing

Ever heard of Greenwashing? Well, another common phenomenon is Pinkwashing.

Curious to learn more?

What is Pinkwashing?

Pinkwashing is a term used to describe a company or product that intends to make its customers believe they are active supporters of anti-breast cancer movements and organizations, while in fact using carcinogenic chemicals that are known to cause breast-cancer. The very cancer they are trying to fight. Quite a contradiction, to say the least!

Remember the glossy pink ribbon seen on certain packagings? Well, unless the product is quite "natural" and free of Parabens, Phthalates, Metals and Petrolatum, among others, chances are you are allowing dangerous chemicals to seep into your body.

The paradox is that we as models represent such brands, I have but one thing to say: change happens from the inside out. Be a Pioneer in your own environment!

To learn more visit the excellent coalition Campaign for Safe Cosmetics.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PCW2kr1YIxk

Do you know what is in your makeup and skincare products? It is better if you check it out. You don't want to put harmful chemicals on your skin, do you? If you do that would mean your body needs more effort to detox from the chemicals.

. * Needless to say, breast-cancer and its onset is a complex subject. By no means are certain cosmetic products the only cause of its onset. Environmental factors, genetics, family background, lifestyle etc. all play an important, yet perhaps unknown, role in its development.

Quinoa pasta with cashew pesto

This is a simple recipe but it makes you look like a true chef! Pasta with cashew pesto is delicious and nutritious using cashews as a creamy base. While the usual pesto is made of pine nuts & basil mixed together, this is proof you can use other nuts to get a creamy base, and arugula for the green color and flavoring. You can decide to make this pasta vegan by leaving out the parmesan cheese (I have to say the parmesan cheese helps the flavor a lot!). Quinoa pasta is the newest thing on the market: pasta made from quinoa. You can of course use any other pasta like whole wheat pasta.

Quinoa pasta with homemade cashew pesto
This is a simple recipe but it makes you look like a true chef!

Author:
Cuisine: italian
Recipe type: dinner
Serves: 2

Prep time:
Cook time:
Total time:

Ingredients
  • 2 handfuls of cashews
  • 2 handfuls of arugula
  • olive oil
  • grated parmesan cheese
  • seasalt
  • pepper
  • lemon juice
  • basil (optional)
  • Quinoa pasta (or any other pasta you like) a cup per person

Instructions
  1. Mix the arugula, cashews, olive oil, lemon juice, salt, pepper, parmesan cheese in a blender until a smooth texture.
  2. You could add basil for the flavoring, but is not necessary.
  3. Cook the pasta al dente, with a bit of seasalt & olive oil, following the instructions on the package. (I cook and turn heat to medium, and taste the pasta until I like the bite)
  4. Drain the pasta.
  5. Add the pesto to the pasta and mix well together.
  6. Serve & enjoy!

Notes
You can leave out the parmesan for a milder flavored sauce or if you want a vegan sauce. You can substitute for any other pasta kind. This pasta is nice with a piece of grilled fish like salmon ( if you eat fish) and grilled tomatoes!

Be healthy on the GO!

I've been asked a lot what I do to avoid unhealthy eating habits , so this article is dedicated to that. Some basic actions can really save your day!

Everywhere I go, I try to look for new places where I can find exciting organic food options. Also I go for greener options as much as I can, re using plastic and paper bags or water bottles for example - and always manage my diet to be the best as possible in the most different situations.

foto 1

I don't like how plane food tastes and how it makes you feel bloated - so I've found a solution for it: always pack a few healthy snacks and a nice home made meal to eat on the plane...

I spend so much time in airports and airplanes that if I don't take proper care, I'd end up eating something not good for me. At the first time I made my own bowl with plenty of healthy food I felt much more vitality and energy to handle those never ending 10 hours seated on a plane. Everyone should try it! No shame! Even the plane staff helped me out heating the meal, and there it goes a tip if you wanna do the same: take an aluminum bowl to make it easier, then ask someone to heat for you just the way they do it with regular food they serve it.

fotoThis beautiful plate was made with love by my boyfriend and it's all organic quinoa beets and carrots with tilapia fillet and caramelized onions and some boiled egg whites! YUMMY

foto 3That meal was the first one we made to eat healthy on the go: Brussels sprouts, broccoli, sweet potatoes and fish fillet

Sometimes at work, snacks before or after lunch time, are not nutritious enough to help me get going through my day of hard work. So again I've found a solution. I ALWAYS take with me energy protein bars, nuts and other organic snacks in little bowls that fit in my bag. I will never go to work unprepared, because we never know what's for breakfast and lunch. I'm known by stylists and beauty artists for doing it ( they usually sees me sneaking in my purse ), they call me "smart girl" and I have the pleasure to share my treats with them.

These are a few simple things you could integrate in to your routine, or if you don't have a routine (in my case).  You just need to think ahead of all difficult situations you're gonna be dealing with, so you are prepared for everything!

Follow these tips on a daily basis, and you will not regret anything after all :

  • Try not to stay more than 3 hours without eating, ALWAYS have some good snacks with you, otherwise will won't even notice that it's been hours since you bite something.
  • Drink water! sometimes your body will trick you, so you might think you're hungry and would end up cheating with bad snacks, when your body it's JUST thirsty !
  • If you don't exercise that much ( or as much as you'd like to ); always goes for smart choices: stairs instead of elevators, go walking or biking to work  - do not ever lose a chance of moving your body!

Blue Zones: How to live to be a 100

Dan Buettner did a very interesting research on how to live a healthy and long life. He found out there are a few areas that he calls 'blue zones', where people live to be over a hundred years old in a measurably better way! Wow, who doesn't want that? Since my sweet grandmother lived to be 98 and I myself am half Costarican (one of the blue zones) I had hoped I was blessed with great genes that made me set for an awesome 100+ life. But...genes are only about 10% responsibe! So....what's the secret of the 'blue zoners'?

1. They move naturally

None of the people he interviewed went to the gym. None! Instead, their lives were naturally filled with movement. They gardened, worked on a farm, or walked to the vineyard down the mountain every day. Also, when they did 'exercise', it was only for fun. Whether it was dancing, playing with the kids, sailing or playing soccer, they purely did it out of enjoyment.

2. They have the 'right' outlook

Work to live, instead of living to work. Also, one of the most important things he found was a strong sense of purpose, having a reason to get out of bed each day and that makes you truly enthousiastic. And...no matter how busy the day is, always have at least one moment of peace and relaxation every day!

3. They eat wisely

Their diets were mainly plant-based, so a lot of vegetables and fruit were consumed. Meat and processed food were an exception! Moderation seemed to be a key word, many of them ate about 80% of what they initially wanted to eat. We have a saying that goes: the eyes are bigger than the stomach, which is so true! Instead of piling up the food on their plate, they took a little less. It takes a little while for the brain to realize the stomach is full, so I personally thought this was a very good idea. But don't think these ladies and gents were depriving themselves of some fun! A couple of glasses of red wine per day turned out be very common.

4. They belong to the 'right' tribe

A strong circle of family and friends, and a sense of belonging proved to be very critical. Often, the 100+ people lived with their children and grandchildren. It kept them young and gave them a sense of importance. Giving life advice to a grandchild is a win-win situation, good for everybody. For some guidance of their own, they turned to a higher power. They all had strong religious or spiritual belief system that made them resilient and grateful. Interesting stuff, right?

A BEAUTIFUL ALKALINE BODY

Did you know that you can actually make your body more beautiful, simply by becoming more ‘alkaline’? Your body has a delicate pH balancing system in which it works to keep equilibrium & stop your body fluids from becoming more ‘acid’ or if needed, too alkaline. I’m going to focus on the alkalising bit in this article as we very rarely get ‘too alkaline’ in our modern day, fast paced, un-natural lives!

Think of it this way…

ALKALINE = Improved health, extra energy, enhanced beauty, toned & more supple body, glowing skin, sparkling eyes, lustrous hair, high libido, healthy nails, faster wound/injury healing, flexibility, strengthened immunity, feeling of lightness & balance within the body, mood enhancing/positive mind.

ACID = Lethargy, sickness prone, cellulite, bad breath, slow healing, sagging skin, bloodshot eyes, dark circles, falling hair, acne, dandruff, low libido, tight muscles, painful joints, aches/pains, headaches, brittle nails, feeling of heaviness, clumsiness, depression/negative mind.

Without going into extensive scientific details here on pH know (Antoniette HELP! lol)... I'm pretty sure the term 'pH' refers to the alkalinity or acidity of water solutions. Ie: your blood & body fluids, but can refer to the watery + mineral content of anything from soil to water to plants etc. There are wonderful books, charts & informative material on the web you can discover to educate yourself on saliva & urinary pH testing, which can be a highly beneficial monitoring system. This said I usually gauge my 'alkalinity' by the way I feel!

Foods that promote Alkalinity

Raw foods especially vegetables & green foods, spring water, almost all fruits, raw milks & cheeses, cultured foods such as sauerkraut (recipe to come!), kefir, kombucha & others. Lightly cooked vege’s & broths. Freshly pressed fruit & vegetable juices, wheatgrass juice, green drinks & smoothies. Fatty fish. Almonds. Sufficient rest. Yoga. Moderation. Light stress free exercise which is enjoyable. Sunlight, hydrotherapy & fresh country air. The sea. Love, laughter & peace of mind.

Of course, there are more but these are some of the big ones you want to make sure you’re doing or not doing!

Things that contribute to Acidity

Denatured foods such as white sugar, white breads/biscuits/pastries, red meats, soft drinks, smoking, late nights, excessive technology, fluoridated water, overwork, city air, excessiveness, coffee/tea, antibiotics, preservatives/flavourings/colourings, dried fruits, high protein foods (even natural foods, eat moderately), high intensity exercise or labour, lack of sunlight & stress.

alkaline-food-chart

Ways to create an Alkaline body

More ways to create an alkaline body would be to indulge in salt glows (scrub moistened skin all over warm body vigorously with sea salt until pink, rinse, towel dry), dancing in the rain, nature walks by the sea or rainforest, loving the dog/horse/budgie or people in your life, deep breathing, walking barefoot on dewy grass, aromatherapy treatments/massage.

MG_7727

Another thought

Don’t you find it interesting to think that the foods which are most beneficial to our health/vitality & wellbeing are the foods which grow in the most abundance & require little or no preparation to enjoy? I’m meaning fruits & vegetables as opposed to meat (needing much land for grazing & spoils easily), grain/nuts/seeds (more difficult to process than fruits & vegetables) etc. Herbs grow in astonishing abundance & almost without cultivation! Herbs are something which I feel we should be consuming more of daily. Also greens, fruits of all kinds, vegetables, grasses/sprouts, & milky grains (such as fresh corn on the cob)…These foods are readily accessible & perfect alkaline nutrition. Even an avocado is rich in valuable nutrients, good fats & is beautiful in alkalinity. These are foods that promote beauty, health & wellbeing in the way we look, think & feel. They fit into our hands perfectly, our mouths & even look like our body systems, organs & sometimes even diseases (now that’s freaky! natures food designed for humans). There's really so much to discover on this subject of alkalising... The effects upon our bodies is immense so do look into it further if you are passionate about health & especially, healing.

MG_7336

Probably the best thing about alkalising is, YES, we will look more gorgeous, there’s no doubt about that whatsoever. It works, making you more beautiful with every positive choice you make. But to me, what's even better than the other best part about alkalising, is in the way makes me feel. AMAZING, fresh, youthful & buzzing with ideas. Every. Single. Day.

LOVE & CHOCOLATE (PS. I'm very very busy with my book, so if I don't write for a while, extra LOVEEE! XXX) Abigail

healthy living is easy: 5 tips

Healthy Living quoteA healthy living is not difficult! As long as you know a few simple rules to live by:

Whatever you put in your body or on your body makes you the way you are, and makes you feel the way you feel.

1. Your diet should consist of mostly fruits, vegetables, beans, grains & seeds, and from local suppliers when possible. (yes, that means focus on your vegetables as the main item in your breakfast, lunch or dinner, not as a side dish.) Buy your produce as much organic as possible. If you think that organic is too expensive, choose the fruits & vegetables that have the thinnest skin (and will probably absorb the pesticides the most) or are known to have the largest amount of pesticides on them organic, and the others non-organic. This way you save 50% or more of your daily chemicals-intake. (you can check the list of fruits and vegetables that are considered the "dirty dozen" by the Enviromental Group, keep checking this list as it changes a lot. And follow this Group as they have a lot of interesting information for a healthy living for you and your family). Local food is just fresher and has less carbon foot print due to less travel.

healthy living quote

2. Eat less meat and fish. And if you do, eat organic meat, and eat sustainable fish with a low mercury level. I am not saying never eat it (although for some people it would be better for their health) But there are some serious environmental problems going on with meat production and fisheries. But make sure you replace with vegetable proteins if you decide to avoid meat and fish at all. Us beings need protein to live. There are many great vegetarian proteins on the market like hemp, brown rice, pea, alfalfa, spirulina, soy to name a few. Pick the one you like the best.

Meat issues: bad living conditions cattle, too much use of growth hormones and medication.

Fish issues: Overfishing (taking all marine life out of one spot at once by using big nets with a lot of by catch), fish farming where fish get additives in their diet (like corn and other things they don't really eat)  + too much metal & plastic pollution which the fish eat, like mercury. Remember: the bigger the fish, the higher their mercury levels probably are.

Too much animal protein is considered to be bad for cardiovascular & heart health, as well as cholesterol, and other unpleasant illnesses. It does not hurt to eat it a little less, and the money you save with that, use to buy organic meat and/or other animal products. And on top of that, meat production has a huge carbon foot print compared to the production of organic vegetable crops. So it is better for you, and for the environment.

3. Remove chemicals from your life. Be conscious of what you put on and in your body! My rule:  Read. What. you. put. in. and. on. your. body! All those amazing make up and skincare products like shampoos and deodorants,  and vitamins you see on the shelves of your supermarkets, drugstore or pharmacies... but that it is for sale there doesn't mean it is that good for you in the long run. Meaning: it might make you look and feel great now, but the ingredients maybe can harm you later on. Read labels and ingredients on the back. A lot of names you can't pronounce and chemicals means: a lot of bad stuff in or on your body. Use medication and vitamins only when your doctor told you to do so, and use organic only products on your body. Because remember: what you put on your face or body can be absorbed by the skin and get into your bloodstream and organs. So be wise what you put on it. This also counts for clothing. These days a lot of clothing and shoes are made with many chemicals, and if it can get on your skin, it can get in your skin.  I also use filtered my water to avoid as many chemicals in my life.

I buy as much as possible organic shampoos, skincare, deodorants, skincare, makeup, food, clothing, water to avoid unwanted toxins and chemicals in my life.

4. Consume less, live more: choose to buy products you really need only. It is better for the environment and for your wallet. If you want to have more, it costs more and you have more responsibilities and worries. But if you don't buy stuff, and only buy quality products if you need to, you will likely be exposed to less chemicals (see above why that is so important), own something that lasts longer,  but also you will have more time to spend with loved ones!

Consume less live more

And try to find vintage and antique stuff. It is made better usually and already has proven itself.

5. Be fit. Don't sit behind a computer all day! Get up and walk, and exercise daily. Relax and enjoy. We don't believe in intense strenuous exercise, but daily moderate exercise like walking, biking, running, yoga, fitness, pilates all work! I even like jumping on a trampoline. The places in the World where people live the longest, the so-called "Blue Zones" are all areas where people are moving all day, and mostly just around the house doing daily tasks like cleaning, cooking and growing food to eat. It doesn't need to be intense, just move your body!

Healthy living is no trend, it is a way of life.

Delicious fast food recipe

vegetarian gyros

This is a great dinner if you are craving something delicious but fast!

First of all, I don't like to cook for hours, so all my dishes are made in a short amount of time.

Shopping list for 1 (try to buy organic and local when possible):

- 1 Sweet potato, medium to large

- Cottage cheese (hüttekäse organic  by Latois)

- Half a cucumber

- 1 Tomatoes

- 2  Onions or scallions

- 2 Garlic cloves

- Aoïli (you can make this yourself too, Jamie Oliver has a delicious recipe on his site)

- Salt/pepper

- Mild olive oil to stir fry with (or another healthy oil to stir fry with to your liking, like tea oil)

- Vegetarian gyro (gyros) from a health food store. I love the one from Healthy Planet that I buy at Ekoplaza. But there are other brands too, just google it online!  ( for this dish you can also use seitan or other stir fry vegetarian pieces, to stir fry too with some of your favorite spices, or if you eat meat, go find organic lean gyro(s) or other lean meat to stir fry with. Ask your local organic butcher. I still believe vegetarian is better for you and the environment so that is my preference)

Total price: less than €9  per person for this dish. The vegetarian gyro(s) by Healthy Planet I bought was €3.39 (good for 2 people or if you are hungry you can eat the whole thing), the cottage cheese by Latois €1.69, Aoili by Florentin for one package costs €3,19 (you can use this one for a long time as you only need a large spoon or so, so per portion it is under a Euro) The rest of the 3 Euros is for a tomato, a cucumber, sweet potato, garlic and onions. I think everything you can buy a version in the regular supermarket, but this type of Gyro(s) I only find in a health food store as Ekoplaza. You can use other stir fry products that are vegetarian at most supermarkets worldwide though!

How to make:

Cook the sweet potatoes in their skin in water with a pinch of salt, until they soften a bit. Take them out, dry them, put a cut in the middle.

While the sweet potatoes cook, you cut the tomatoes, onions or scallions and the garlic cloves and stir fry it with the gyro(s) in a bit of olive oil. If your gyro is seasoned you don't have to add seasoning. But if you use seitan you have to add a bit of salt, pepper and herbs to your liking. Add the stir fried gyro(s) on your plate.

Cut the cucumber and place on also your plate. Add a spoon of aioli.

Fill up the sweet potato with cottage cheese (hüttekäse), add a bit of salt and pepper on top. Add on your plate. This dish takes about as long as the potatoes have to cook. Because in the period they cook you prepare the rest of your food!

Enjoy!

Love, Lonneke

Breakfast: babyfood grows up!

When I was young I always loved a "fruithapje". A dish made out of fruits and other delicious things for breakfast or as a snack.

Organice Your Life team member Dirk Verest and I played with the ingredients and came up with the following modern version of my preferred baby food!

Remember: the eye wants something too, so think of a fun way to display your food, like in a recycled glass jar! Dirk used a 400ml jar. Which he thought was the right size for the right amount of food for a full feeling during the rest of the morning.

Breakfast jar

Shopping list for 1:  (buy organic and local whenever possible)

- organic (Greek) yoghurt

-  1 Apple

-  1 Kiwi

- 1 Mango

- 1 Grapefruit

- About 2 tablespoons of Teff. a type of grain from Africa that is healthy & gluten free, which is Dirk's favorite grain, and which one spoon helps to keep the shredded fruits form a cohesive mass. (It has to soak up the fruitjuices) You can also try it without Teff, or try another dry breakfast product like oatmeal, Brinta, or Liga, but from our experience this works the best.

- handful of your preferred muesli.

How to make:

Add layers of yoghurt, muesli & shaved fruits in a jar.

This one has layers of:

fruits: * Shaved organic apple & mango, * Cut Kiwis in cubes between. *Mixed with Teff for fibers and essential minerals, * Fresh squeezed grapefruit juice.

Yoghurt: Greek organic yoghurt.

Crunch: organic crunchy muesli.

Costs: Less than €3 euros per person, maybe even less. It all depends on what fruits you put in that make the price go up. The more local and in season fruits you buy, the cheaper it is! Everything is for sale at a regular supermarket, the teff is only available in specialized organic food stores or for sale online.

SUMMER IN OZ

What's your favourite season? Are you obsessed with Winter coats, layering and snuggly fireplaces? I must say the feeling of jumping into the car turning on the heater full blast whilst drinking copious amounts of green tea on the way home from a Winter surf is one of my favourite cold weather moments. So invigorating!

I don't know if it's because of my Portuguese heritage but I do utterly obsess over Summer! Absolutely. I love Spring too - as it heralds the onset of warmer days, exotic fruits galore and fresh flowers :)

Above are a few random i-pics by me - you may have seen some on Instagram already.

It's Winter season down under, but wherever you are it's important to feel warm for healing, beauty, and life. Some of my favourite tips to stay warm and energised are:

*Cold showers - yes even in Winter (best taken after a brisk walk or some form or activity, and with warm clothes ready to put straight on) boost the immune system and strengthens will power, mind and heart. Keeps you young and toned too!

*Vigorous Exercise

*Sunbaths - when its out, strip off & lay in it!

*Raw foods - even if its just a fresh juice, or a carrot before lunch

*Spices such as Cayenne, Ginger, Garlic

*Chocolate :) always makes me feel warm inside!
