Organice my home on a budget

One year, we had a big renovation in our rental house. Finally we got double (or insulated) windows, central heating, a new ventilation system, new kitchen, bathroom and toilet, and new balconies. Everything was really old and dirty, so we were happy for this big change in our house. Not to mention the mount we would save on our energy bill. We had to move out for several weeks, and when our house was finished we wanted to make a fresh start!

My mood board

We had the idea to change most of our furniture, but we didn't had much money. So what to do?

A few weeks before our renovation we had to pack all of our stuff in boxes; the house had to be empty for the construction workers. Best moment to make choices: what are we going to keep? And what are we going to throw away?

Or better: what are we going to sell? We wanted to sell all of our old stuff at a flea market, to create money for new furniture! We packed ten moving boxes, got one big clothing rack, and collected so much more.

With a lot of enthusiasm, fun and sunshine, me and my husband had a great day! Sales of this day? 530 EUR (715 US dollars)!!!

So now we had a budget: 530 EUR to buy furniture. We didn't want to buy new stuff, cause we prefer vintage furniture. We love the old look and feel of a used piece. We made a mood board with some pretty things, and then we went searching: flea markets, second-hand stores, internet.

And we found some real good stuff!

Checklist to organice your home on a budget

Old furniture

  • Collect your old stuff in your house. Take your time; do it when the weather is bad, or when you are bored.
  •  Take pictures, and put it on internet (eBay, marketplace, etc) so people can place bids. You can also rent a stall at a flea market in your neighborhood.

New furniture

  • Make your own moodboard. What do you like? Buy magazines, follow vintage blogs, look around, visit second hand stores and make pictures.
  • Make time to search for beautiful vintage furniture on the internet. When you find something you really want mail or call the seller immediately! Place your own bid!
  • When you want to buy something from the internet, don't check everything all the time. Check the new advertisements every day. Look at old advertisements when you have more time.
  • Take your time! You don't have to hurry. Tomorrow is another day to look around. Make your own plan, make it fun. But don't hesitate when you find something you really like: buy it!

I hope you are inspired.. I'm in love with our home on a budget!

Easy Clean with soap nuts

Did you know you can wash your laundry with soap nuts?

My introduction to soap nuts

WOW. Now I really know nature has it all. I'd never heard of these clean as a whistle little munchkins until I attended a soapmaking class. The information shared was AMAZING. Afterwards, people lined up for ages to purchase soap setting boxes, natural ingredients to make soap with...AND the best thing ever! SOAPNUTS. They look delicious don't they, & yet they are, SOAP?? Yes. Soap, in a nutshell! I'm still wowed out that these grow on trees (actually they are soap berries or Sapindus mukorossi) Anyway... All you do is boil 6 of them up in half a liter of water for 20 minutes & you have your very own, liquid soap. Strain before filling a pump 'foaming' bottle & keep near the kitchen sink, bathroom vanity or laundry to wash your hands without chemicals!

Isn't that simply 100% genius from mother earth? I think I'll add a little essential oil to mine...& apparently, you need to use it up within two weeks. That's because there's no nasties!!!! No evil preservatives. MMMM I like this soap.

Here is a little video for you to get an idea what you can do with soap nuts:

Vanilla-Chiaseed Mylkshake

As a girl one of my favorite things was a cold vanilla milkshake. Usually made with lots of sugar, dairy milk, ice-cream. Definitely not a healthy way to get re-energized, in my opinion. Throughout summer I like to make each member of my family a juice daily, & a smoothie or 'mylkshake' (the truefood alkalizing energizing mylkshake you have when you are NOT having a milkshake!). Here's today's simple & delicious recipe!

Vanilla-Chiaseed Mylkshake
The truefood alkalising energizing mylkshake you have when your NOT having a milkshake!

Author:
Recipe type: smoothie
Serves: 2

Prep time:
Cook time:
Total time:

Ingredients
  • 2 young green coconuts, water & pulp
  • 1-2 tablespoons soaked chiaseeds (at least 15 min but best overnight) + more to stir through later if desired
  • 1-2 tablespoons light agave, more if you want it really sweet
  • The scraped seeds from an organic vanilla pod OR natural vanilla extract
  • 10 icecubes (optional but really good!)

Instructions
  1. BLEND coconut water, pulp, chia, agave & vanilla together until very smooth & creamy, adding the ice last & blend again.
  2. If you love chia seeds as much as I do, stir through another spoonful of whole soaked chia seeds for texture. Divide into 2 tall glasses & enjoy!

Notes
A Bonus: Coconut water is PACKED with super-hydrating goodness (means - a facial, for your cells) PLUS it's naturally high in lauric acid which actually BURNS fat for me as I sit here sipping & typing ;)

Frosty Fruity - Raw Chocolate

I love to talk about raw chocolate! Check out my video and recipe below.

p.s If you would like to make this recipe for Frosty Fruity when you're going to have an actual frosty Xmas day, you can always swap the frozen fruits for some stewed fruit or dried fruits and perhaps some spices such as cinnamon, cayenne and nutmeg to make a more warming kind of chocolate treat.

CACAO VANILLA HALVA

SOOO CRAZY BUSY working on all the planning for fashion/beauty/chocolate shoots for my up & coming book MODEL CHOCOLATE & I can't share the real ripper recipes, but here's a little idea for you to get more cacao into your day as well as more calcium.

SESAME halva has long been hailed a beauty food in many European wellness clinics & for good reason! Lots of good fats, vitamins & minerals & so delicious & easy to make.

In my book I like to make it a little less traditional by topping it all up with the extra antioxidants & chocolatey goodness of raw cacao.

To make halva, simply whiz raw sesame seeds in a coffee grinder or blender, placing into a bowl, add a little pure vanilla & raw honey to bind it into a sticky mass, not too much or it will be too sweet. Then simply halve the mixture & add raw cacao powder & a little maple syrup to one part. Layer the vanilla into a sealable glass dish & top it with the raw chocolate halva. DONE! An easy snack you can share with a friend & a pot of tea, or a satisfying raw dessert after a yummy green salad. I love it & it works wonders on my skin!

RAW CHOCOLATE LOVE

Hi loves! Hope you're having a wonderful day :)

I'm so very busy right now working on my first cookbook ~ MODEL CHOCOLATE ~ which is getting closer by the moment! My chocolate brings you more energy, love & beauty with every supergorgeous bite! There are over 50 (more like 60) recipes in it ranging from breakfasts to desserts & even a couple of beauty treatments using raw cacao. In just over a month we'll be shooting the cover & I'll share sneak peaks here via Organic Your Life! Stay tuned...

For now though, I want to share with you a few raw chocolate tips you can do oh-so-easily which will enhance your:

Life  - this oldest living lady a chocoholic? woo!

Beauty - antioxidants second to none on the face of the earth

Love - watch this awesome inspiring  informative video by lord Cacao Wolfe

Health - extra raw cacao nutrition info

Happiness - anything that tastes this good & this good (bravo Val) & is every bit as good for you as it tastes makes you happy inside!! With those two recipes alone you can throw a little chocolate party! MMMMM.

Stock up on goodies:

Raw cacao powder, raw cacao nibs, raw cacao beans, creamed coconut, coconut oil, organic essential oils like peppermint, orange, lavender. Spices like cayenne & cinnamon, dried fruits such as blueberries, mango, incaberries. Organic fresh & frozen fruits & superfruits! Sweeteners such as raw honey, raw agave, maple syrup, coconut sugar. Organic nuts & seeds. Superpowders such as mesquite, lucuma, maqui berry, hemp protien, acai berry, maca. SOO GOOD.

Now you can do anything...!

Try:

Adding raw cacao, coconut oil, shavings of creamed coconut, cacao nibs, spices to nuts & seeds or organic fruits in your day. You can make simple fresh fruits exciting by adding yogurt & raw cacao nibs on top. You could add a sprinkling of raw cacao powder over a bowl of oatmeal before drizzling on honey & cinnamon. Rolling medjool dates in superpowders, mentioned above, & fill with raw cacao nibs or powder mixed with hazelnut butter. Snacking on cacao beans & goji berries is a favourite of many healthy people worldwide & for good reasons :)

Replace hot chocolate drinks with raw cacao hot chocolate. Don't scald it, place almond milk over raw cacao powder first, froth it with spices if you like & sweetener - then pour over the boiling water.

You can add cacao nibs or raw cacao powder into smoothies. I have a supersmoothie recipe in my book which is pretty much just young green coconut water with blueberries, cacao & any choice of superpowders/foods you like! It can taste scrumptious or earthy & medicinal depending on your combinations or needs on the day. A smoothie a day to keep the doctor away!

There's many great recipes available on the internet using raw cacao so have a play. Its worth the effort in all its blessedness... BUT if you are superbusy & want to buy chocolate instead PLEASE PLEASE choose only to buy fairtrade (refuse to support child slavery) for the rest of your life. I'd rather never taste chocolate again than buy chocolate that ruins a childs life. Remember too, buy chocolate that is what I call 'fairtrade by birth'. This means the company has always been fairtrade, rather than just slapping on a logo to keep up with the changing trends.

Activated Pepita Snack

SNACK TIME :) Pepitas = Pumpkin Seeds = Vitamin E (skin +) & Niacin (read - amazing amazing for your brain = mood food!) & sooo much more. Google the happy little dears.

Many of you will already be up on the know of how damaging heated oils are to your health. Roasted nuts & seeds are so tasty & morish but also high in heated oils even when they're dry roasted. Here's a simple snack you can make which will satisfy your body's true need ~ FOR NUTRIENTS. Perfect along with a few carrot sticks in the handbag, they are high in protein too! This is how I prefer to eat my pumpkin seeds. My family do like theirs roasted & I make a three seed mix for them (roasted!) I prefer the recipe 'activated' which means they've become a living food & ready to GROW! Activated foods are much easier to digest, more alkalising to the body & even richer in vitamins & minerals :)

Recipe:
Organic soaked pepitas, drained
Tamari
Celtic salt (opt)
Cayenne pepper (I like lots!)

Add seasonings to *soaked drained pepitas, to taste. Dehydrate overnight in a dehydrator or very slow oven (say 40'C). Store in a jar ready for snacking or packing! MMM! I also love these sprinkled over salads, steamed garlic broccoli with my seed cheese for a quick, light, nutritious meal.

*To soak any amount, double the measure of pepitas with water & leave 3 hours at room temperature

Love & chocolate (there is a raw chocolate recipe in my book you'll love using pepitas, can't wait to share!) xxx Abigail

Weird & Wonderful ~ Seaweed

Seaweed is excellent for EVERYTHING. Seriously.

Check out some of the nutritional benefits:

*Nori has twice as much Vitamin C as oranges, packed with beta-carotene like carrots, rich in calcium for your bones, iodine and iron for thyroid, and are great in making sushi.

*Arame is laden with macro minerals like magnesium, potassium, calcium, sodium and iodine.

*Kelp is high in iodine, which must be present for proper glandular function and metabolism. It also contains phosphorus and calcium, as well as magnesium and potassium. Kelp is a source of vitamins A, B1, B2, C, D and E, plus amino acids. Because kelp is the saltiest of sea veggies, it makes a popular salt substitute. However, it’s been tested to be low in sodium.

*Wakame is iron-rich and 10 times more calcium than a glass of milk!

Try whipping up a seaweed salad to have on hand. That way you can easily add it to almost any meal during the week. Try eating it with just about anything savoury, for extra valuable nutrients! I used Arame this time. Instead of boiling it like the packet recommended I simply soak the arame in boiling water for 20-30 minutes, then drain.

It went especially well with an unusual 'pome-chilli' dressing I made to disguise some of the seaweedy taste. I used one part pomegranate molasses, one part agave, 2 parts macadamia oil, 2 parts apple cider vinegar, 2 small finely sliced organic onions, salt to taste, & chilli flakes (for my lack of fresh cayenne peppers)! A sprinkling of fresh basil (parsley may be used instead with success) from the garden is complementary & the chilli will help distract the tastebuds a little also ;)

You can expect: Shiny hair, clear mind, radiant skin, healthy teeth & gums, thyroid function, immunity, cell regeneration (highly anti-aging), bone & joint function, weight loss, detoxification...& everything else. Think of it as a superfood to enhance your superhuman lifestyle!

NYE Incaberry Rum Balls

Quick!! Get busy like I did in the kitchen this afternoon & create my latest chocolate invention ;)) LOL as of this second... full of antioxidants, good fats, & most importantly RUM. Haha. Yes well, don't tell to many people I posted about RUM so loudly, I've actually never been drunk in my life, & when I buy anything of the such I SNEAK (& I mean sneak you know, sunglasses, long dress, shaggy hair - the whole deal) So funny, this health freak, vegan/vego organico nutter buying RUM. THEN I hide it.

So here's the naughty recipe (Actually NOT as it contains no milk, sugar, butter or processed foods)... Only for NYE, & to be shared around. Now don't worry if you haven't got any incaberries as wonderful as they are, simply replace with more raisins.

Abi's INCABERRY RUM BALLS

  • 1 270g tin coconut cream (I used 'ayam' brand)
  • 1 teaspoon natural vanilla
  • 3 tablespoons organic rum
  • 2 tablespoons organic coconut oil (I use 'Niugini')
  • 1 1/2 cups coconut sugar
  • 1 cup ground coconut (coffee grinder)
  • 1/2 cup rice bran (fine)
  • 1 tablespoon finely chopped incaberries (superfood from health food stores)
  • 1/2 cup organic sultanas
  • 1 cup organic chopped raisins
  • 2 cups ground (blender) rice puffs
  • 1/2 cup organic cocoa powder
  • Cacao powder, for rolling

Mix it all up! Refrigerate to chill a little, say 10-15 minutes. Then roll them in cacao powder. Keep them in the cold. YUMMO.

It'll be the first thing I taste in 2012! :D
