Models listening at IMG model prep 2012

IMG Model Talk

Did you know for years I helped young models live a healthy and organized life? For instance, on September 1st 2011, Anne-Marie van Dijk and I went to my agency IMG for the first annual IMG Model Prep which happens right before the agency's new girls start Fashion Week.

Fashion Week preparations

Not only is the fashion industry a demanding industry, the weeks leading up to Fashion Week season, and fashion weeks themselves can be mentally and physically exhausting. (Young) models have to run around town going on castings, fittings, shows, and afterparties, subway in and out, and this continuous for weeks from the early morning until late at night.

IMG which is the top agency in the World, was the first to create this event where they bring in industry professionals and experts to advise the girls on tips on what to do doing castings and shows, support and how to handle the crazy business that is fashion. Most girls need to HALT at some point because they are "Hungry, Anxious, Lonely & Tired: HALT". A great clinical worker named Betsy Selman-Babinecz explained this principle to the girls.

My IMG model talk

I shared with the girls my past experiences in the industry and starting at the very young age of 13, and how I continued having a successful career. I advised the girls and gave them valuable advice about how to handle the stressful fashion week season (i.e. always carry water, snacks and take time by yourself to recharge and breathe), but also about having longevity in the business, which in my view is most crucial. It is about caring for yourself, so you are able to have a long and healthy future in this very demanding and competitive world.

My friend Anne-Marie introduced her CLEANSE program. It works with models, and the CLEANSE team which is comprised of experts ranging from nutritionists, personal trainers, psychologists and beyond. They have a model counselor who works with the girls individually and allows them to have a healthy body, mind and soul.

Girls were given goodie bags with nice things to help them in their modeling work. There were different tables with nice companies that were giving samples, like the sample juices from BluePrintCleanse.

At the end of the night, everyone left inspired. It was a wonderful evening on the beautiful IMG terrace, celebrating health and hopefully a lot of success of the girls this season and in their modeling career.

Eliminate Plastic Waste

Riding the waves and spouting full force, a pod of slender black and white orca whales are in pursuit of the season’s salmon:

Plastify-Anne-Marie-Van-Dijk

My work as a whale researcher

These were my days spent as a whale researcher in Puget Sound back in 2002. Our research topic: killer whale behavior.

During my first months as a researcher I soon came to realize that the animal I had come to adore, a totemic species in the Pacific Northwest, was deeply threatened by a silent, stealthier killer. A killer that disintegrates and seeps under your skin, accumulates on micro levels and is just simply impossible to get rid of: PLASTIC.

READ MORE: How quickly plastic nanoparticles can get into marine life

To us Westerners living in a consumerist society plastic has become a commodity, a necessity, a way of living, perhaps saving lives in the form of plastic syringes but also bringing luxury in the form of stylized computers. For marine animals and the ocean, however, plastic has turned into a nightmare. Turtles ingest plastic bags mistaking them for jellyfish, dolphins get entangled in fishing nets and birds swallow pellets formed by plastic debris floating in the ocean.

It's a big World with a lot of plastic waste

One may ask where all this plastic goes. Surely my plastic bottle must be recycled and transformed into a new one. If not, the world is big enough to handle a few extra billion tons of plastic waste each year.

This could not be further from the truth. Tragically, in the U.S., only 20% of plastic bottles that are thrown away get recycled. The other 80% gets dumped into landfills or reaches the ocean. Most of our waste today is made up of plastic. Plastic, which is made from petroleum, takes centuries to degrade. In fact, “every bit of plastic that has ever been created still exists, except for a small amount that has been incinerated, is releasing toxic chemicals”.

The Pacific Ocean is now famous for its infamous “Pacific Garbage Patch”, a swirling vortex of plastic debris and trash twice the size of Texas – the biggest landfill in the world.

The Atlantic Ocean is forming a patch of its own, as is the Indian Ocean. What is even more alarming is that plastic disintegrates, breaking down into smaller particles (polymers) yet never fully biodegrading, the process by which material decays and is absorbed back into the environment. What this means, literally, is that our oceans are turning into plastic.

It's a small World with plastic waste after all

What will happen to the whale called Killer? Orca whales are now regarded as some of the most toxic animals on Earth due to the rapid accumulation of harmful chemicals into their bodies. The pods in the Pacific Northwest have been put on the endangered species list, but to what avail?

In November 2009, Lonneke Engel, Eyal Amir and myself held a party–Pura Vida– in honor of the oceans and how to lessen our impact on our planet by promoting the use of sustainable, eco-friendly, reusable bottles. Although the subject of plastic, its toxic by-products and how this affects our planet is an extremely complex one to which there are no easy solutions, every action counts and every step is a step in the right direction.

At Organice Your Life we believe change starts at the individual level. It is with this in mind that OYL hopes to inspire you and provide you with the tips and knowledge on how to live a sounder and eco-friendlier life, a life that is better for body and planet.

We hope you enjoy this issue and as Margaret Mead once said:

“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has."

Kick The Plastic Habit - What can YOU do to eliminate plastic waste

Refuse & Reduce

  • Use an eco-friendly, BPA free, reusable bottle. This is better for your health and friendlier for the environment.
  • Ditch the plastic bag: carry an eco-friendly canvas tote with you at all times.
Select fresh, local fruits and vegetables as opposed to pre-packed.
  • Prepare your lunch at home with fresh ingredients (not packaged in plastic) and carry it with you in a glass container.
  • Stop using plastic cutlery. Use real silverware whenever you can. Keep a few real knives and forks at the office or, when ordering-in, specifically ask not to include paper napkins and plastic silverware.

Re-use & Recycle

  • By shopping at eco-friendly stores you support the reuse of plastic and the recycling of waste materials.
 Examples like Freitag.
  • If you have leftover plastic bags bring them to a grocery store that recycles them, or use them instead of regular garbage bags.

Be Inspired

Above all, encourage your friends and colleagues to do the same!

That time I did an 1 day juice cleanse

I once did an one day juice cleanse. All the way with the cheesy "I kiss my juice" pictures as proof.  I had a bit hangover from just drinking 2 bellinis at the Operation Smile Ball the day before. So when you don't feel so great, what do you do? Exactly you take care of yourself! Eating really healthy is your own medicine. So I decided to visit Organic Avenue.

About Organic Avenue

Organic Avenue was a vegan and rawfood chain in New York City. It was founded by Denise Mari, and back in the day I did an interview with her. There were so many new Organic Avenue Locations popping up around town at one point. To me it seemed they had a lot of success, but they also seemed to grow too fast. After a few years Denise sold the company, and from what I've read, she came back on board to run the company.  OA incorporated different foods into the menu besides cleanses (the vegan chicken and waffles was great!) but eventually they went out of business :( . Sad story of a vegan health food store I enjoyed so much in NYC! I notice many of my favorite restaurants have gone out of business, it is just part of doing business in New York City.

Now back to the juice cleanse story: There used to be an Organic Avenue Location in Soho, close to where I live, and I decided to do their one day cleanses.

The 1 day juice cleanse

I received 7 bottles of juice. 1 small one to start the day with chlorophyll, and 6 juices.  You were told to drink water in between..

8.30 am

Let's start this juice cleanse! I woke up tired and had my first juice at this time. A chlorophyll shot that made my tongue green! It has a specific taste, but it is not bad. Chlorophyll comes from plants and is an "extremely important bio molecule, critical in photosynthesis, which allows plants to absorb energy from light."- Quote from Wikipedia

10 am

My first real juice is a nice simple orange juice. A great way to start a morning with some sweet citrus fruit juice.

12 pm

Green Love juice. Cucumber, celery, chard, spinach, pear, collard greens, kale, romaine, parsley, lemon juice. This one is a bit hard to drink due to the large amount of greens in this juice. So it took me a bit longer to drink this juice!

2.30 pm

Turmeric Tonic,  lemon juice, ginger juice, purified alkaline water, coconut sugar, turmeric, cayenne pepper, black pepper, cardamom, himalayan salt. This one was spicy but I actually liked this juice! It tasted a bit like something from the Middle East because of the spices. I drank it quite fast.

4.30pm

Veggie Vibe: carrot, cucumber, beet, celery, chard, spinach, ginger, parsley, lemon. This one is hard again! Took me longer time to drink. But you feel really healthy drinking it.

At this point I felt really energized and fit! Getting so many minerals and vitamins in, plus water is really doing good for your body, right?

6.30 pm

Spicy Avocado Soup: avocado, purified alkaline water, spinach, lime juice, celery, cilantro, garlic, Himalayan salt, jalapeño, cumin. This is my least favorite. maybe because of the garlic and that it is thicker. It took me some effort to drink it.

8pm

Last juice of the day! Fresh, sweet coconut juice. I love ending a day like this with something super yummy!

Although some people do cleanses a few days in a row, I think it was nice to just do a one day cleanse. This way it does not "shock" your body while still replenishing your body with the essential nutrients. It is also a great that for that day you have a plan, and the 7 juices keep you on track. You don't have to think what you are gonna eat or what's for dinner at night. The cleanse is telling you that already so it relieves stress that way as well!

Why a one day juice cleanse might be good for you

Because you drink the whole day so you are very much hydrated.  And you don't have much time to feel hungry. Right when you feel hungry, you have the thicker Spicy Avocado soup that is filling. I think anyone can do a 1 day cleanse to just feel better and get rid of toxins or indigestion, if you don't get tempted by any food! So do this during a rainy day when you are likely to stay at home, or if you are stuck at the office with no food in sight, that's my recommendation.

You start to appreciate food more while on a cleanse, that is for sure!

Why juicing might not so good for you

You notice there is a lot of parsley added to the juices. This is because parsley contains lots of Vitamin K, a lot of antioxidants, which helps our bones and strengthens our nervous system.(that's good!) But I only learnt later that Parsley, other green leafy vegetables and beets contain a lot of oxalates and goitrogens. I will go into that some other time why that is actually not so good for some people like myself (oxalates can form crystals in your body and can cause kidney stones, goitrogens slow down a thyroid). Not to mention the high sugar intake which research suggests due to the lack of fiber that helps release sugar slowly into the blood system, a juice is causing a sugar spike. And juices that are not pasteurized, can bring harmful bacteria to your gut which can cause a whole other range of issues.

Maybe, just maybe, juice cleansing was a hype from 2006-2016, and now people just have one juice once a while and are onto another fad, like Keto or Paleo?

Related: Why no one does juice cleanses anymore

Organic Avenue used to offer their juices in glass bottles, but they were more expensive as there was a fee for returning the bottles. Now they serve the juices in BPA- free plastic, I thought that was a nice thing! Of course with the demise of Organic Avenue, their bottles are gone too. (I just kept one as a souvenir).

If you want to do a cleanse, there are many places in New York City and beyond to get a juice from, including Juice Press, Pressed Juicery ,Blueprint and Juice Generation

p.s. for my readers in the Netherlands: you can order from Sapmeesters.

Final thought on cleanses: You should decide yourself what works for you! I will now enjoy a small juice once a while!

5 steps to a beautiful skin

I’m not going to talk about any products in this post, but I will tell you about 5 simple steps that I do and that will help you to achieve a beautiful skin. Sure, clean healthy whole food diet is one of the most important part of having a beautiful skin. I will talk more about it in the next post.

Here are the 5 steps:

1. Cleanse - use mild soap cleanser to wash your face daily.

2 Exfoliate – use gentle scrub to remove dead skin from your face.

3. Tone – this is very important step. Use alcohol free toner before you apply the moisturizer. This will help to soften and prepare your skin for a deeper moisturizing.

4. Moisturize – find a hydrating cream that works best for your skin type.

5. Protect – apply SPF daily! Try to find a chemical-free organic skin care brand that will not clog your pores.

Practice these steps daily, starting today!

Good luck and embrace your beautiful self!

LOVE, VAL

Blue Print Cleanse

Blue Print Cleanse

Hi all! I needed something to get back on track (o just this one day of eating sugars, carbohydrates, drinking wine turned into way longer)

After trying the Blue Print Cleanse about a half a year ago with great success I decided to embark on it again before heading back to Europe for a few weeks of modeling, to get myself back into a healthy eating mindset. This cleanse also helps boost your immune system as well as clears your skin! (sounds good to me!)

Today is day one of three. Thankfully these juices are tasty... I'm not going to say I havent thought of pancakes or a sandwich or mmm..ok need to stop this is making me hungry.

The best part about these juices is they get delivered to your door the night before you start. The bottles are numbered from 1 to 6 so you cant screw up the order you are supposed to drink them in. You get all sorts of tips from blueprint cleanse via email throughout your cleanse which I like.

go to the website to order your own juices! http://blueprintcleanse.com/
