Supplement Vitamins and Minerals?

This post is also available in: Dutch

Although we are healthier than ever before, the World population’s general health is deteriorating. There are more and more “Lifestyle Diseases”  and almost half the western population suffers from some kind of chronic illness. The human population has been advancing and our life expectancy has increased year after year. But for the first time in decades we see that the life expectancy of newborns is lower than that of their parents. These days you easily  get sick and it is very hard to stay healthy. But I believe that we can have a great influence on our health by leading a healthy lifestyle.

Are vitamin and mineral supplements essential for good health?

Is it good to supplement vitamins and minerals? Today, the debate flares up on the use of vitamins and minerals. It especially focuses on the high-dose supplements. Scientists claim that if you eat healthy and varied you are getting all the vitamins and minerals you need. According to them, high-dose supplements are unnecessary and even dangerous to your health. Many studies have shown time and again the benefits of vitamin and mineral supplements, because nutritional deficiencies are very common nowadays .

Nutritional supplements have been used safely for decades and Europe and the US are very strict on safety regulations. Studies shows that only 2% of Westerners eat according to the nutritional guidelines. So what is a good balance between nutrition and supplements?

I believe that modern day diets contain too few nutrients. Therefore, I am advocating the use of high-dose supplements in conjunction with a healthy diet. Even a 100% organic diet does not prevent a lack of nutrients. This defect is easy to overcome by supplementing. But it is very important that you go for high quality supplements.

Supplements are sold everywhere, but unfortunately the quality is not always up to par. A lot of famous vitamin brands that advertise on TV and in magazines, and various private label brands do not match the vitamin structure of your body and are often filled with bad additives (in Europe E-numbers). These products are often cheaper but the compounds are poorly absorbed by the body. When it comes to supplements you are be better off spending a little more money on a multivitamin that your body can utilize for 100%.

Good quality brands that I believe in include Solgar, Vitals, Aov, Bonusan, Ortholon and Orthica . These brands are available at specialty health & wellness stores or drugstores. Some are organic and some are not. All brands have a special focus, and their own vitamins & minerals composition.

Most of all, just like with any food you eat, you need to read the labels on the package of vitamins and research what is in it. Ask someone who specializes in vitamins on what vitamins you should use, instead of deciding yourself what vitamins to take. That way you have a better chance to avoid error or overdosing. You will get the right dose of the right vitamins and hopefully it will help to feel great!

If you have any questions on multivitamins  you can leave a comment below,

Best, Daan

    Hello from France Daan,
Thank you very much for your article very interesting and very informative.
I became completly obsessed with healthy food, I really like to know what I eat and if it’s really good for my body.
Sometimes, I make diets to be more efficient in my sport and I often feel tired and upset when I lose weight.
To be honest with you Daan, I’ve always been repulsive about pills, I really prefer the natural food, but your article really interested me and I like to try new things.
Obviously, I will ask my pharmacist for advice, but I would also like to have your opinion.
Do you advice me to buy vitamin and mineral supplements ?
What does that mean “high-dose supplements” ? (this means you have to eat a lot !?)
Scientist claim that high-dose supplements are dangerous for health, can you confirm that it’s not dangerous ?
Thank you again for your article Daan, I think perhaps you have found the solution to my problem of weight loss.

      Hi Christophe,

Thank you for your comment on my article. It is good to hear that you are working hard and doing so well with your health. I understand very well that people are cautious about taking supplements. Part of it is the result of the fact that people lack information and knowledge about supplements. I hope my to change that by contributing to peoples knowledge via my articles on Organice Your Life.

To come back to your question. Can I confirm that you can take supplements without any risks? In my opinion I certainly can. The supplements sold in France must also meet stringent quality requirements. My advice to you would be to start with the basics and ask your pharmacist for the following products (preferably form the brand Solgar):

      – A multi- vitamin that matches the vitamin and mineral structure of your body;
      – A good Omega 3 high in Epa/Dha
      – 25mcg vitamin D3 tablets.

As you read in my article there are only so much vitamins and minerals in our daily diet. So do not fear you vitamin and miniral intake will be to high, because the chances you have a vitamins and minerals deficiency are much more likely.

If you have any more questions please let me know!

    Hi Daan,
Thank you so much for your answer and forgive me for my comment that can seem a little hard, I didn’t wish call into question your knowledge and skills, but as you say, it’s just I’m completly unaware on the subject.
I’ll go to my pharmacist after work to buy Omega 3 high in Epa/Dha and 25mcg vitamin D3 tablets that you suggested me and just ask how many capsules should I eat per day.
Once again, forgive me Daan and thank you very much.

    Hello Daan,
Thank you for the great article.I’ve been reading the Organiceyourlife site since it first started as a free forum years ago.I have done a fair amount of educating myself on health, diet and nutrition myself.I used to take vitamin D supplements as my mother’s side of the family is osteopenia prone, and I was also living in a cold climate for half of last year. Now that I have moved back to Hawai’i I haven’t been taking the vitamin D;I was taking 3,000 IU a day. What are your thoughts on that?
Also I occasionally come down with a cold or flu, probably once a year or every other year.I did some research today and went through my cupboard where I found a lot of vitamins to take:Zinc whole food complex (with maca, elderberry and super fruits),vitamin C,a teaspoon of cinnamon with local raw honey, tea with ginger.I went to an organic store and bought these capsules I had taken the original Host Defense capsules years ago and did not get sick for years.I also sliced up some raw garlic and swallowed that.So I would appreciate your thoughts!

      Hi Tanja,

I think it is great that you added vitamin D! I would take between 3000iu to 5000iu per day.

The supplements that you mention such as elderberry and zinc are definitely good to protect against flu symptoms. But if I were you I would also think of probiotics! 85% of your immune system comes from your gut. Probiotics ensures optimal digestion. The better your bowels work the better your immune system works. Just try 2 capsules a day for 2 to 3 months. Look for something like Advanced multi-billion Dophilus form Solgar.

Thank you for replying Daan.I used to take probiotics the last few years,I had interstitial cystitis and had food sensitivities and allergies.I actually prefer to make my own kombucha and have that several times a week for optimal digestion. It really helps a lot and probiotics are quite expensive.
Thank you and have a nice day!
