My 5 favorite John Masters Organics products

I have tried many all-organic shampoos and conditioners, but nothing gave my hair a healthy shine, but they only dulled my hair. I am still looking for a 100% organic & green haircare, but John Masters Organics haircare comes pretty close, and I love to use this for my hair. In fact, when I use his shampoo, I have to go less to the hair stylist to cut my hair and put a gloss in my hair, as my hair stays much stronger and shinier longer!

When I recently wanted to visit the John Masters hair salon in NYC, I found out they left! Too bad, now I have to order their products online.

The story behind John Masters Organics

This is what I found out: The vision of John Masters, a pioneer in the city of New York when it comes to creating a hair salon with more than what just meets the eye.

"We only get one body, and we only get one planet."

His personal - strict- product guideline that I found online:

1. No sodium lauryl sulfate, parabens, DEAs, MEAs, or TEAs

2. No GMOs (Genetically Modified Organism)

3. No petro-chemicals

4. No animal testing

5. No artificial colors, fragrances or fillers

6. Ingredients must be as organic as possible

7. All plant extracts and essential oils must be certified organic whenever possible

8. All essential oils used must be steam-distilled and not extracted with propylene glycol - which kills the effect of the oils

9. All plant oils must be cold pressed, not heat distilled - which kills the therapeutic properties of plant oils

10. All ingredients must be proven to be beneficial to the hair or skin

11. All ingredients must be harvested in an environmentally-friendly manner (wild-crafted)

12. All ingredients must be biodegradable as possible

homemade body scrub

Making your own body scrub, it is very easy!

You basically need 3 ingredients ( preferably organic).

3 ingredient homemade body scrub

  1. A scrubbing ingredient: crushed salt, sand, sugar, crushed nuts or anything else that can scrub but is not too coarse.
  2. An oil to nurture and soften the skin. Anything from olive oil (not extra virgin) to coconut oil, almond oil.
  3. A drop of an ingredient for the scent: lemon, tea tree, rose water, vanilla whatever is your favorite scent!

Mix it all and use it on wet skin, and massage softly onto your skin. Afterwards, rinse with water. It works and makes your skin soft and smell great!

Toxic Nail Polish

Is your nail polish toxic?

When you paint your nails, you don't think about it really. You are busy making your hands look beautiful. But what is really in nail polish? Because it always smells so strong too...

It turns out there are a lot of bad things in most nail polishes, like formaldehyde, Campher, phthalates and Toluene. And because your nails and skins absorps these chemicals, they travel through your whole body. Not good! These chemicals are extremely toxic and have been linked to cause cancer eventually. Especially pregnant women should be careful.

Non Toxic Nail Polish

But there is a solution: nail polishes that do not have all these ingredients!

There are more & more brands coming with nail polishes that are not toxic. I use brands like Zoya, Priti Nails and Deborah Lippmann (click picture below). They stay on great, some even better than the toxic nail polishes, and they are better for you.

Don't forget: EVERYTHING you put on your body affects your health. Be smart what you put on your hair, skin & nails!

Four Foods for Fantastic Skin!

"Four foods for Fantastic Skin!"

Because naturally glowing skin really does start from the inside out, here are a few fresh, whole food ideas that will really make your skin glow! Here are my 4 favorite foods for skin that will make it fantastic:

  1. Healthy Fats, such as Avocado, Raw Nuts and Coconut Oil will plump up your skin and reduce winkles.
  2. Vitamin A, necessary for healthy skin can be found in Carrots and Sweet Potatoes.
  3. Vitamin C, always amazing for you, are in Berries, Mangos and Cantaloupes.
  4. And lastly, Hydration! The most important for nice skin, I try for Green Tea and lots of water!

And now here are some foods that should be avoided!

  1. Alcohol – it’s terribly dehydrating!
  2. Refined sugar – wreaks havoc on your hormones that could cause breakouts.
  3. Dairy – is difficult to digest for most, and could also lead to breakouts :(
  4. Processed food – Just try no to eat anything that comes from a box! ;)

Moisturizing mask for dry hands

My hands get so dry in winter, especially this season! I have tried many creams, and many of them does work, but what really made a difference on my skin is this “formula”:

I use a Lavender Hand Cream by natural skin care line  “Jurlique” plus one more secret ingredient, which is  a Vitamin E-complex! I add  a few drops of  the “Liquid E-complex” by “Country Life”. I mix it all together and leave it on my hands for a few moments. Just like that:

This “mask” is really moisturizing my hands, and leaves them very soft.

SKIN CARE FOR MEN

As the days are getting colder (well, here in the Netherlands) I have to be extra careful with my skin. Not every man likes to put some effort in his "beauty" skin care for men regime (most men only wash their faces with water and that's it), but I'm a fanatic skin care user for many years now. I don't mind getting older (I'm 33 right now), but with my healthy lifestyle and the help of some natural products I can reduce the process a little bit.

As you know I don't drink any alcohol for almost a year anymore (read: Choose Your Juice), and I can see the effect on my skin! It looks healthier than ever before!

Every morning I use some natural face products for men. Here are the steps in pictures:

Step 1:

You can scrub your face a few times a week. Always apply it on a moisty face (and neck). Wash it away with lots of hot water.

Japanese Skin Care Products

Hello! I know its been a while since I've uploaded a post. Hope you all are doing great and enjoying this gorgeous summer weather.

Today I want to share with you some of my new beauty products that I've brought with me from my resent trip to Japan.

As you might know , I LOVE beauty products and I LOVE to discover something new. When I'm traveling, I always visit a local pharmacies and department stores, just to wonder around the aisles and to see what kind beauty products locals like to use.

While shopping for a beauty products in Tokyo, I've discoverd that Face and Body soaps are HUGE in Japan! I mean, some departments stores has the whole aisle dedicated just to face soaps!

"Japan Organic" Aloe lotion, face brush to exfoliate, cotton face masks, hand creams and face soap

I was pleased to see a lot of brands using only natural ingredients such as clay and charcoal. It gently washes pores while moisturizing and pulling out toxins.

I also discovered that the main and key ingredientes in most of the Japanese skin care products are green tea and rice! I've got a couple of hand and eye creams with such ingredients.

When it comes to convenience and saving space, Japanese are the leading experts. Check out this super cool "RelaThera" face mask (see the picture below). It is no bigger then an inch, but once you moisture it with a toner, lotion or Evian water, it becomes the size to perfectly fit your face. I like to moisture it with simple Evian water, apply it on my face, lay down and relax for 15 min. It works as a moisture face pack.

Rela Thera Face mask, Face soap, face towel

Face towls are also a "must" in skin care routine of a japanese women. So, I've got one for myself made of bamboo. I use it to remove make up at the end of the day. I usually apply creamy makeup remover on my face, including eye area and lashes. Next step is to moisture face towle with warm water, then gnetly pressing toawle over your face, remove makeup and dirt.

What are your favorite beauty products and tools? Please, share with us some of the most intersting beauty products from your country.

coconut oil for my skin!

I am obsessed with coconut oil!

New OYL contributor , top model Teresa Lourenco told me about it. So I bought a jar, and started using it all over my body. Not only did it smell great, my skin started glowing! There are different kinds of coconut oils. Some you can also use for cooking. Read labels for what you can use the coconut oil for before buying it.

I got the organic coconut oil from Spectrum.

I am sure Teresa Lourenco will tell you all about the health benefits of Coconut oil soon, and why she loves it!

I used it when I went to the premiere of the movie Savages last week. My skin was glowing!

By the way, that movie by Oliver Stone is not so kosher to put it that way, and if you have a weak stomach please think twice before watching this movie! It is a movie about drugs and weed in USA and Mexico... how you can get entangled into a world you don't want to be in... There was also some great acting and even though blood flowed a lot, watching Benicio del Toro and Salma Hayek act great, was worth it. Other actors in this movie: John Travolta and Blake Lively and 2 other cute actors.

My Skin Care Routine

After writing a post about “5 steps to a beautiful skin” , someone asked me what products I use. So this is the continuation to my previous post.

As you can see on the picture (above) that I took of my bathroom shelve, those are 8 key products that I use in my skin regime.

(In no particular order, but as showing on the picture)

1. “AMORE PACIFIC” treatment enzyme peel. I use it as a scrub daily, after washing my face with a cleanser.  It is so gentle and doesn’t irritate my face. It comes as a powder, which activates by adding  water (I use Evian pure water). Helps to get rid of toxins and dead skin cells. It is plant-based product, made without chemicals and other nasty ingredients.

2. “REN”  detox clay mask. I love this clay mask! I use it after a shower, while my pores are still “open”. This mask contains kaolin clay and spirulina. Helps to remove excess sebum and reduce pore size. I apply it all over my face for 15 min. It dries out while pulling excess oil and dirt out of the pores. Again, this mask is  free of synthetic chemicals.

3. “M.D. Forte” soap-free hydrating cleanser. I use it every day before a bedtime. Its like a soap, but doesn’t actually contains a soap. I love it, because it doesn’t make my skin dry and “tight” .  My dermatologist gave it to me, and I can’t imaging using anything else.

  1. “Jurlique” Lavender Hydrating Mist. It’s my toner. I love the smell of lavender! I use it after the “M.D. Forte” and before the moisturizer. It contains only few ingredients and the main ingredient is lavender oil.

4. “EMINENCE” Rosehip Whip Moisturizer. My facialists recommended it to me, and I love it! Its all-natural, organic skin care line from Europe. I really like the texture and it smells like a rose.

5. “Eminence” Couperose-C Serum . It’s a pure Vitamin complex. Contains Q10, Vitamin A, Vitamin C and E. I use it by mixing a few drops with my moisturizer, or on a clean face before a bedtime, along itself. It  is a powerful antioxidant treatment, that helps to fight wrinkles.

6. “SKIN CEUTICALS” Phloretin CF.  Its a night treatment, I use it on a clean face, applying few drops. It prevents and corrects sun-spots, heals the scars, calms the redness, fights free-radicals, get rid of the pimples,.. You name it! It’s the miracle product haha! I totally love it!

7. “CLARINS” UV Plus SPF 40. My sun protection. I like it because it’s a high number, also it doesn’t make my skin white like other products, plus it doesn’t  break out my skin.

Well, I hope you find this helpful. Maybe you will discover a natural product that works, please share with me!

My new discovery of Vitamin E oil!

We all know Vitamin E has a whole host of benefits and can be found in many foods that we eat everyday, like:

almonds, olives, spinach, blueberries, sunflower seeds, vegetable oils, tomatoes, wheat germ, avocado and the list goes on and on.

To begin with here are some important key facts to keep in mind:

Vitamin E is essential to life -- we cannot live without it.
How much vitamin E is enough? Prominent researchers believe that to perform at its best, the body needs more than the US Daily Value (DV) of 30 IU vitamin E daily. Average healthy females should have 400 IU a day, and average healthy males 600 IU a day.
Vitamin E should be taken at mealtime -- it is absorbed better when taken with meals rather than an on an empty stomach.
Inorganic Iron can DESTROY vitamin E. According to the Shute Institute, the two should be separated in the stomach by an 8-9 hour interval. However, organic iron, found in spinach, and other iron rich foods can be taken at the same time as vitamin E.

What I have recently discovered though is Vitamin E oil for my skin & nails. I had purchased some vitamin E capsules a few months ago, and after hearing the many great benefits of it, decided to put it to good use... but I wasn't going to take it in pill form (although for some individuals this is necessary, assess accordingly). What I have started to do is topically apply the oil to my skin and nails !!!

To begin with I started to put it on blemish marks as I had read about it through researching, and came up with vitamin E oil and its healing properties with scarring. Even though no proven research exists regarding this oil and its effects on scarring, I was willing to take the risk and see what would happen.

Low and behold it worked WONDERS ! Now I don't apply it all over like a lotion. I take a clean needle point, prick the capsule, squeeze out the oil on the back of my hand and carefully apply it to any blemish, or mark that has been left over from a breakout. I usually do this in the morning, and sometimes let it soak in for hours, and just leave it. Or I put it on for just a little bit and pat is slightly. The key is consistency (everyday) you could do it at night as well, but I swear marks heal 100 times faster, and the whole cycle is cut in half.

I don't want to guarantee anything as everyone's skin is different, but honestly it does not hurt to try ! See it as an experiment and proceed cautiously as with any new topical treatment.

Now what to do with the leftover oil on your hand? (as you only need a little bit), use it as a hand moisturizer! I swear to you my hands, nails cuticles, everything have never looked better. My nails have a glistening sheen (no need for nail polish/hardener), and my hands are SO soft. Oh and my nails grow now at a warp speed. It is actually quite crazy, and you truly have to see it with your own eyes to believe it.

So next time you are at the store, pick up some Vitamin E capsules! All natural, healthy, and so extremely versatile. Just make sure you do a patch test first, as everyone has different skin types and bodies.
