IMPORTANT UPDATE: Skin burn
Tags: skin | burn | important | update | irene |

Maybe you remember my blog from last week about the skin burn?

My sister (who is a doctor) saw my wound yesterday and got really angry with me! (I didn’t have it covered up and the crust was starting to peel off)

She said that if a burn is bigger than an old quarter coin (about 20mm) then you have to take extra care of it! And if it’s bigger than a 2 euro coin then you should go see a doctor! Well it was just slightly smaller than that!

My sister put some aloe vera burn relief gel on it and covered the wound with special burn bandage so it wouldn’t stick on the wound and it wouldn’t be infected. And she gave me a prescription for silversulfadiazine which is a disinfecting cream to prevent infections on open wounds like burns and to prevent scarring. And I should keep it covered up!

So therefore this update! DON’T BE A FOOL LIKE ME!

Check out burns properly! and if you have doubts?

GO SEE A DOCTOR!

No Woman, No Cry
Tags: christy | turlington | documentary | women | healthcare | childbirth |

With a special thanks to Lonneke, Eyal and I were invited to a very special occasion - an introduction and sneak preview of Christy Turlington's first and new documentary movie, "No Woman, No Cry".

The event was attended by a nice group of people, including famous designer Diane Von Furstenberg and model Liya Kebede, who is also known for her tremendous charity work.

"No Woman, No Cry" is dedicated to addressing the lack of maternal healthcare in countries around the world leading to the deaths of hundreds of thousands of women each year while in 90% of those cases the deaths were completely preventable!!

It is shocking to learn about such high numbers when in fact, the technology is there. America alone has a high maternal death rate, but not just because there isn't enough maternal care....... ethnicity plays a role in this case with caucasian women having a higher chance of receiving proper care than women of different color.

This is shocking and deeply tragic.

If you feel as strongly as we do about this or would like to know more, visit the links below.

We, at OYL, will of course keep you updated when Christy's film comes out in the cinema!

In the meantime, enjoy this beautiful trailer - Eyal and I were especially touched by Christy's sincerity and devotion to the cause.

She stands behind every word she says and is a true 'ambassador' when it comes to maternal healthcare.

Volcanic Ash....
Tags: volcanic | ash | airplane | giovanni | bodycare |

You might have seen it take over the news the past days.... but volcanic ash does not only make flights get delayed or cancelled, it actually has a lot of good things too!

Besides immediate destruction when a volcano sprays the volcanic ash on the surroundings, and damaging engines of planes if they fly through an ash cloud,( the particles add weight, and change balance, it scratches windows and lights, and can make engines shut off) it can also form fertile soil. Soil to grow plants, and diversity, something that is good for nature.

And it is good for you too! I shower everyday with Giovanni's D-Tox bodywash and scrub, that actually warm up when you rub it between your hands, and feels amazing. As the name shows, it is used as a detox for your body...

But at this moment I am actually waiting to see if I can board a flight to Europe. So far they have all been cancelled..I have to wait to see if the ash cloud of the eruption of the Eyjafjallajokul volcano in Iceland of the past weeks, will pass in time, so I can fly to Geneva for work....But in the meantime while I am waiting, I will just give a postive twist to these problems, and take a shower.... with volcanic ash...

UPDATE: my flight and job were cancelled, so I am still at home. At least I am home! I have heard from a lot of people who were stranded, and trying to get home.... Maybe you had the same problem... I hope everyone got home safe, or will come home soon!

Minishopper
Tags: tips | bags | plastic | sustainable | irene |

A good tip for everybody!
Always take a minishopper wherever you go.
This has saved me so much money and plastic!

A minishopper is a quite large sized strong bag made of fabric.
It folds up easily into a little package that fits in a little wrapper.
Which is really handy to take with you. (See picture)
I always have one in my bag.
So whenever I go to the grocery store, the market or shops, I use that bag instead of having to buy a plastic bag or getting one automatically from the cashiers.

It only cost me 1 Euro, so that was a really good investment!

Update:
I found some places online to buy them!
Check the forum for more info.

Organice Your documents
Tags: organice | google | documents |

Nothing is worse than losing all your important information!

Like I did last week: My Mac crashed.

It is not only that I cannot regularly update this website ( I have to find a computer where I can), but also, all my important information is now gone!

I did backup some of it on an external hard drive, which is a good option, but those can crash too...

What I found is the best solution, is to save documents that I need in the future, or that I am working on, online!

Google documents is a great way to online work on documents, order them, and save them.
Also, you can invite people to read the documents, and you can also decide who can work on them or not!

There are many other, virtual places where you can save your information.
Like facebook saves your friends, thoughts, pictures and words, Flickr saves your pictures, you can basically save anything! ( and have the world see it if you decide too!)

Google documents seems pretty save, and I use it too. Try it out, if you are doing your homework, or making a report that someone has to O.K. Or if you ( with someone) are writing a book.

Online you can find more places that are suitable for every bit of information you like to be saved, secretly or for everyone to see!

Flight tracking
Tags: flying | website | tracking |

When you want to know exactly when someone is arriving on a flight, all you have to do is check online at different flight tracking websites.

These websites allow you to put in an airline and flight number, and then it shows you exactly where the airplane is. What speed, on what height it is, and when it is expected to land.

if you refresh your website every few minutes you will see an update. Also really fun is it that they show a map of the world with the location of the airplane.

Flying and CO2
Tags: co2 | travel | energy saving | klm | flying |

I read an interesting article today,in the July issue of KLM's Holland Herald magazine. I was on my way to Milan, to yet another photo shoot.

One thing caught my eye:

1 KILO REDUCTION IN WEIGHT = 780 GRAMS LESS CO2 !!!

The article:

" The CO2 Equation.

The fact that one kilogram reduction in weight results in 780 grams less CO2 emissions, for each long-haul flight, speaks for itself.

Since 2008, KLM's " Weight & Fuel" programme has take CO2 reduction a step further. Some actions so far....

-Reduced weight of aircraft fixtures such as lightweight coffee pots and trolleys.
-Training for pilots focussing on fuel efficiency awareness
-A booklet of fuel-saving tips is regularly updated and distributed to flight crew.
-Individual fuel reports allow flight captains to monitor their fuel consumption
-Improve use of statistical information such as passenger numbers, weight of baggage and freight, and weather conditions allows the crew to more accurately calculate the amount of fuel to be carried, resulting in lower emissions."

Maybe reconsider when packing your bag for a trip?

Those extra shoes can stay home you know!

I always try to pack only Carry On.

I know, it takes many times doing it, to get the hang of it.

You will get there with the right attitude!
