Frozen Rice Dream Pies!
Tags: rice | dream | pie | vegan | snack |

I have to share this snack/dessert with you!

I watched my friend Alicia on Oprah talk about how good they were, so I had to try them for myself.

The frozen Rice Dream Vanilla Pie, is a vegan (non-dairy) cold treat! Vanilla rice dream ice cream in between 2 oatmeal cookies, covered in carob chocolate.

So good!

They are unfortunately 320 kcal per serving, and not organic, but you can treat yourself to something "bad" that is good sometimes right?

They have chocolate, mocha, mint and vanilla pies ( vanilla is my favorite) and some have regular chocolate coating, delish!

Freeze!
Tags: maruja | frozen | vegetables | healthy |

Even though it's really fun to go to a farmer's market and look for the nicest looking fruit and vegetables, what seems to be even healthier? Frozen vegetables! Since they are usually frozen right after harvesting, the vitamins are preserved a little better. 'Fresh' vegetables (unless you grow them yourself in the backyard) lay around for a while because of the distribution process of about 2 weeks, causing them to los nutritional value. So let's ditch the bad rap, let's go frozen!

The Dirty Dozen
Tags: dirty dozen | buy organic | vegetables | fruit |

People always complain that organic is so much more expensive than regular. Why would you choose the organic then? There is a reason to pick the organic ones, especially with vegetables and fruit. This because then hormones and toxic pesticides have not been used to grow the product. people who grow lettuce for instance, wear protective suits when they spray pesticides. ( and we eat that lettuce!)

There is a list of 15 cleanest, and 12 dirtiest ( Dirty Dozen) fruits and vegetables, when it comes to use of pesticides.
If you don't have too much money to spend, chose the 12 in the list of the dirtiest ones, organic. The 15 in the list of the cleanest ones, is o.k. to purchase not organic. Of course as much organic is the best.

Here are the lists:

-Peaches
-Apples
-Sweet Bell Peppers
-Celery
-Nectarines
-Strawberries
-Cherries
-Lettuce
-Grapes (imported)
-Pears
-Spinach
-Kale

Cleanest:
-Onions
-Avocados
-Sweet Corn ( frozen)
-Pineapples
-Mango
-Sweet Peas( frozen)
-Asparagus
-Kiwi
-tomato
-Cabbage
-Broccoli
-Eggplant
-Papaya
-Watermelon
-Sweet Potatoe

5 tips: shopping in Supermarket
Tags: 5 tips | groceries | supermarket | books |

1. Never go shopping when you are hungry! You will buy much more, and probably more bad things too!

2. the products that are on eye level, and on the corners of aisles, are usually the ones the company pay the most to be put there, as they generally generate more sales when the products are in sight. It doesn't always mean it is the best, or the cheapest. No, usually they are the junk food. search the whole aisle for better choices.

3. Milk is always put in the back of the store, this because most people need milk, yoghurt butter or eggs. So you have to walk through all the long aisles, and hopefully put some products in your basket along the way.

4. read food labels. When you can't pronounce what is in it, It is probably not so good for you. You can go online and search what the ingredient is, or buy the book " What's really in your basket?" by Bill Statham, to see what the ingredient means. Also anything with high fructose corn syrup is not good for you!

5.Buy mostly fresh produce, not canned or prepackaged. Frozen is ok. Don't buy for a whole week. come back a few times in a week, and just buy what you need for those 2 or 3 days. Otherwise by the end of the week you have to throw away a lot of things that have gone bad, and this way you save money!

Nutrition tips!
Tags: nutrition | junk food | tips | vegetables | calories |

Everybody wants to lose a pound sometime.
Just think about this:

It is not about how many calories you eat, it is about the quality of those calories!

Junk food ( even the "light" versions) are "empty" calories.
Your body doesn't know what to do with those calories, so those go straight to your butt, hips and thighs!!!
They pollute your body.
And it takes forever to try to take them off.

A banana, tomato or whole wheat bread or nutritious calories.
Your body knows what to do with them, and uses them for instance, to help your organs to function properly.

For those who want to know more about calories:

1 gram of fat is 9 calories.
1 gram of sugar is 4 calories
1 gram of protein is 4 calories
1 gram of carbohydrates is 4 calories

I never count calories. because counting calories is not going to help you lose weight permanently ( maybe for a short period)
Your body needs nutritious calories to function!

When you suddenly get a very low calorie intake (because you stop eating normally) your body shuts off internally and tries to survive.
When you start eating normally, your body suddenly wants to absorb every calorie possible!
This is called the "Jo-Jo effect".
You want to prevent this from happening.
When it has happened to you once, it is hard to stay away from jojo-ing.

So how do you lose weight healthily?

When I want to get in better shape, I eat more fresh food, like colored vegetables, brown rice, beans and brown bread( a little bit)

I stay away from canned or prepackaged food( with a long expiration date)

Frozen "fresh" food is ok!

Fruit has a lot of ( healthy sugar) so I don't eat them too much in this period. Sugar turns into fat in your body, even the healthy sugars! So just a bit of juice in morning, and an apple as a snack is good!

And of course I exercise one way or another at the same time!
