I came across a new quote in the world of Green & Organic: Certified Humane. What does that mean?

It was on the lid of the yoghurt I bought at Whole Foods in NYC this week by Green Valley organics.(Btw, the yoghurt is really tasty and it is lactose-free).

In this world people will find new ways to brand their product so it is just a bit more different than others. Since the green movement has taken over the supermarkets it seems, companies need a new slogan to show their product is the best, and showing that they take on another part of the production and make it better, greener, more organic etc. The newest one? Certified Humane.

Green Valley Organics’ “Peace, Love, Dairy” and “no lactose, no worries” got my attention when I was looking for a new yoghurt to have for breakfast. But they also claim they are Certified Humane, which means that they raise and handle the cows in an humane and animal friendly way. They are part of the Certified Humane Raised and Handled® Program, and that seems like a great thing, as animals should be treated good and that should be the standard not the exemption. This is run by a non-profit USA organization called Humane Farm Animal Care, or HFAC.

From the Green Valley Organics website:

“the Certified Humane Raised and Handled® Program improves the lives of farm animals by setting rigorous standards, conducting annual inspections and certifying the animals’ humane treatment and care.”

You can read about the Certified Humane Raised and Handled® Program at www.certifiedhumane.org and also become a sponsor. You can also read their Standards, who is certified, where you can buy Certified Humane Products, what restaurants joined, or watch their video!
