My hometown Arnhem is known as one of the greenest cities of the Netherlands (in 2009 Arnhem was the greenest city of Europe!).
Arnhem is surrounded by nature: we have the beautiful historic Sonsbeek parc next to the centre, the river Rhine is floathing through the city (remember the famous movie A Bridge Too Far?), there are lots of trees and hidden gardens, and now we have a roof garden on top of one of the parkings in this city!
Roof Garden is an iniative by As We Speak (pro Arnhem’s online magazine) and Belhamels (event agency). They wanted to create a little peaceful place in the right of the centre, between all the buildings and concrete.
This garden is free for all the people in the city, and it’s totally transformable. So when they want to move it to another roof, it’s all possible! Everything is made out of palletwood, and a lot of volunteers did all the hard work!
They created beachchairs and picknick tables, and boxes for vegetables. All fruits and veggies were donated by several organisations from Arnhem. You are free to eat the fruit, and you can take some veggies with you if you want to!
There is even a hottub called the Dutch Tub! This is a wood burning hot tub. The crackling wood creates a steady temperature, so you can enjoy the hot water and each other for hours.
This summer the garden is open with a great programme: silent disco, yoga and pilates, silent cinema, meetings, parties, etc.
So if you are in the neighbourhood bring this garden a visit! I know where I’m gonna spend my summer! And you?
