Lonneke doing 1 day cleanse

1 day juice cleanse

1 day cleanse from Organic Avenue

1 day cleanse from Organic Avenue

Today I did a one day juice cleanse. I had a bit hangover from just drinking 2 bellinis at the Operation Smile gala 2 days ago. So when you don’t feel so great, what do you do? Exactly you take care of yourself! Eating really healthy is your own medicine.

As there is an Organic Avenue Location in Soho, close to where I live, I decided to do their one day cleanses. It consists of 7 bottles of juice. 1 small one to start the day with chlorophyll, and 6 juices.  You have to drink water in between.. Let me tell you about my experiences of the juicing today!

chlorophyll shot

chlorophyll shot

8.30 am: Let’s start this juicing! I woke up tired and had my first juice at this time. A chlorophyll shot that made my tongue green! It has a specific taste, but it is not bad. Chlorophyll comes from plants and is an “extremely important bio molecule, critical in photosynthesis, which allows plants to absorb energy from light.”- Quote from Wikipedia

orange juice

10 am: My first real juice is a nice simple orange juice. A great way to start a morning with some sweet citrus fruit juice.

Green Love juice

Green Love juice

12 am: Green Love juice. Cucumber, celery, chard, spinach, pear, collard greens, kale, romaine, parsley, lemon juice. This one is a bit hard to drink due to the large amount of greens in this juice. So it took me a bit longer to drink this juice!

Turmeric Tonic

Turmeric Tonic

2.30 pm: Turmeric Tonic,  lemon juice, ginger juice, purified alkaline water, coconut sugar, turmeric, cayenne pepper, black pepper, cardamom, himalayan salt. This one was spicy but I actually liked this juice! It tasted a bit like something from the Middle East because of the spices. I drank it quite fast.

Veggie Vibe Juice

Veggie Vibe Juice

4.30pm Veggie Vibe: carrot, cucumber, beet, celery, chard, spinach, ginger, parsley, lemon. This one is hard again! Took me longer time to drink. But you feel really healthy drinking it.

At this point I feel really energized and fit! Getting so many minerals and vitamins in, plus water is really doing good for your body!

Lonneke & Spicy Avocado Soup

Lonneke & Spicy Avocado Soup

6.30 pm Spicy Avocado Soup: avocado, purified alkaline water, spinach, lime juice, celery, cilantro, garlic, Himalayan salt, jalapeño, cumin. This is my least favorite. maybe because of the garlic and that it is thicker. It took me some effort to drink it.

Lonneke & Coconut water

8pm Last juice of the day! Fresh, sweet coconut juice. I love ending a day like this with something super yummy!

Although some people do cleanses a few days in a row, I think it is nice to just do a one day cleanse once a while. This way it does not shock your body while still replenishing your body with the essential nutrients. It is also a great that for that day you have a plan, and the 7 juices keep you on track. You don’t have to think what you are gonna eat or what’s for dinner at night. The cleanse is telling you that already so it relieves stress that way as well!

You notice there is a lot of parsley added to the juices. This is because parsley contains lots of Vitamin K, a lot of antioxidants, which helps our bones and strengthens our nervous system.

Because you drink the whole day,you don’t have much time to feel hungry. Right when you feel hungry, you have the thicker Spicy Avocado soup that is filling. I think anyone can do a 1 day cleanse to just feel better and get rid of toxins, if you don’t get tempted by any food! So do this at a rainy day when you are likely to stay at home, or if you are stuck at the office with no food in sight, that’s my recommendation.

I am looking forward to my brunch with friends tomorrow. You start to appreciate food more while on a cleanse, appreciate the enormous amount of vitality and energy super healthy raw food gives you, but you also really start to listen to your body what it craves. It is like resetting your body.

Organic Avenue used to offer their juices in glass bottles, but they were more expensive as there was a fee for returning the bottles. Now they serve the juices in BPA- free plastic, but I heard they will return to glass bottles again that you have to recycle yourself.

If you want to do a cleanse, in the USA you can order from Organic Avenue. In the Netherlands you have Sapmeesters, although I feel that cleanse is more intense as it incorporates drinking clay water, but they have delicious juices too! Are there any other great cleanses companies in the world? Let me know!

Final thought on cleanses: You should decide yourself what works for you!

Love, Lonneke

    Hi Lonneke,

Thank you for such a great post – you are right, the body knows when it wants to heal and needs extra love and care.

I have recently been unwell and I have found with positive thoughts, gentle exercise, LOTS of rest, vegetarian food (mostly raw) and 2-3 juices daily have helped me to feel better (slowly, but surely) – I feel like I have reconnected with myself again and I am more appreciative of the energy and beauty of organic food, filtered spring water etc – taking time and thought to prepare my meals and to take time to enjoy the flavours and nutrients that the food is providing for my body.

It looks like you really enjoyed your cleanse – your skin and eyes look healthy and glowing like always!

Thank you for your post, I really enjoy the posts focused on Nutrition as this is a great passion of mine (I’m studying to be a Naturopath and Nutritionist here in England and I also work for an organic clinic and shop in London- I would love for you to visit us)!

    Thanks again,

    Emma xxx

This is wonderful! I am a huge fan of juices as a means of cleansing. I think it’s also important to remember the power of spices, as well as various organic vegetables. For example, turmeric, has bountiful health benefits and all it takes is a dash added to any fresh juice!

I like the turmeric juice the best during this cleanse! I think people should be more creative with juicing. so many great tasting combinations are possible that are healthy too! Love, Lonneke

No it was actually good Lonneke! :-) at some point, yogis exercise detaching from sense perception,so sometimes you just chew food and it’s food, you don’t register the taste, but I don’t do that ALL that time!

    Dear Lonneke,

Thank you for this article. I have a question about it: Is it also good for your body to have like a day juice cleanse when you want to lose weight? Doesn’t your metabolisme slow down because of a day like this?

Thank you for this amazing website,

I’ve heard about Organic Avenue before and after reading this post, I’m pretty sure I’ll be checking it out next time I’m in New York City. They all sound great, especially the green juice which reminds me of one I had before (with just one fruit item in it to give it a hint of sweet). Anyway, I love the platform for this website and since going vegan 3 years ago (and raw for about a year), my life has been so much better because of it. Not only does living a raw/healthy/organic lifestyle make you feel and look good but I feel that it has also sharpened my mind so much more.

HI Nienke, the answer to your question: I do not believe in long cleanses as it “shocks” your body. But I do a 1 day cleanse to just clean out my body. Like when I had a lot of heavy foods the day before (think bread, pizza, pasta etc) It gives me a reenergized/clean feeling!

By the way, If you have a juicer you can make all these juices yourself!

Pamela, thank you for your compliment! NYC is full of great restaurants that offer organic/vegetarian/vegan/macrobiotic/raw foods, and we talk about it a lot on http://www.organiceyourlife.com.

See you all soon back here!
